if it's sore the next day, don't do em. If it feels good, do em.

not everyone gets sore from lifting.

Which is unfortunate. I love my DOMS.

I hate it because I have this weird thing where I constantly poke the sore muscle. I guess I like it.

Great posts everyone. Different opinions are always a good thing. So by doing push-ups everyday, you will be basically toning your muscles as in making them look "tighter" and "leaner"?

I see that some people are saying that you should do them daily while others are disagreeing.

NO... losing bodyfat makes you look leaner.

you can do push ups every day it wont hurt you ( if you were to get into weight lifting then you would need to work out, then rest muscle groups).

you will only see a limited benefit from doing pushups however. your muscles wont look visibly "toner" unless you also lose bodyfat, or are already lean.

The word "toning" has become a source of misunderstanding over the years. As you use your muscles against resistance, which is a stress situation, they remain in a state of partial contraction, even at rest. This partial state of continuous contraction gives your muscles a firm feeling that we call tone. In reality, everyone who trains with weights has tone.

I workout with dumbbells every other day - on my shoulders, chest, triceps and biceps. But I've been thinking about adding pushups everyday to add to my workout plan.

I think a lot of people envision tone as meaning lean and cut.

I am thinking about doing this. Is there any harm?

I was thinking that you should give muscles a day to rest, but I'm not sure.

Thanks.

There is a lot of harm. When you work out, your muscle tissue initially breaks down only to build up a little bigger and stronger 24-72 hours later.

If you never give the muscle a chance to build up again - it will shrink.

This is why Abs are the only muscle group you should work out on every day. This is also why weight programs change the work out muscles every day.
OMFG *STABS GARET JAX TRHOUGH INTERNET*

No there is no harm in doing pushups, but it is counter productuve. it is a myth Abs heal quicker.

It's amazing to me how you guys react to different people's opinions.

As I said - I could care less if you guys take my advice or leave it, but I do care when someone intimates what was intimated here.

This is my last post in this thread - so have at it.

It is possible to get "stupid big" doing pushups, dips and pullups. Ask any guy that's been locked up. But then again, those guys are doing hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of them per day. When you're doing that much, you definately need rest days. However, I would imagine that when most of us think about doing pushups, we mean a couple hundred, not thousand per night. So in our case, an off day isn't really necessary. The main thing is, with the amount of resources we have out on "the street" we can achieve those same results without doing some crazy jailhouse pushup routine.

No you just spout off wrong information. In fact I'll start: it is obvious that Jax knows what he is talking about.

agreed w/SVT Cobra ...

doing abs every day is not the proper way to do abs. neither is doing 500 crunches at once.

people think that doing 1K crunches a day will get you abs. there is a reason only a few percent of people have abs to show off ... cause they know the proper ways to get them.

I will reiterate what has already been said here:

1. Abs are a muscle like any other and should be trained as such (i.e. - infrequently with high intensity and adequate rest)

2. Having a visible "6-pack" is more a function of your diet than anything else.

3. Doing lots of pushups will do very little to stimulate chest muscle growth, although it will make you better at doing lots of pushups.
