Is it gone forever?

A couple of weeks ago my 5 year old Optiquest V95 began to periodically make a cracking/snapping sound during which the picture would sort of blink. As time went on these snaps became more frequent - like one every two or three minutes. I've been away from home since Tuesday and returning this evening and firing up my system (its been in monitor sleep mode since I've been gone but the system was not turned off), after a few minutes catching up on my e-mail the snapping started with a succession of three or more at a time with the picture collapsing in on itself more at each snap. Finally there was a series of seven or eight snaps and the picture was gone completely - it has never returned since then.

The monitor operates normally otherwise i.e. when the system is off the power LED goes to amber and when bootup has begun the LED goes to green - but no picture. Right now I'm using my wife's monitor which she graciously offered until I get a replacement.

Is my Optiquest repairable? Would the cost of repair be worth it? Is this the time to go LCD? My gaming is pretty much all flight simulation - what is recommended?

Thanks - Jim J.

I used to have an Optiquest V95 and it died after 3 years.

It's not worth the cost of repair. don't even bother.

Don't even bother with repair. Unless you or a really good friend (who'll help for free) have the tools, skills, and parts to fix it yourself, it isn't worth it. Decent 19-inchers can be had for less than $200 shipped now, and you have the added benefit of starting from day one on a warranty. If you're interested in picking something up used (shameless plug coming:)), I have quite a few 21-inchers and a 19 or two over in my thread in the FS/T forum.

Thanks fellas, I had a notion it wasn't worth looking for repairs. Consumer Reports told me to trash my 27" Sony TV when it went bonkers. Should I swing for an LCD or a fine and less expensive 19" CRT?

That's up to you. CRTs still hold the quality/performance/cost advantage, but are huge and weigh a ton. What's most important to you?
