Save your money for a year. Too much stress your first year in college trying to pay bills and stuff. Second year after you have the hang of it, used your saved money and find a cheap place. Get two other roommates who have stable jobs, and make sure not to put everything in your name in case they bail. Try to do 6 month leases, in case you change your mind. Have fun your freshman year, don't make it harder on yourself than it need be. Also, have you tried looking into dorms? They are cheaper and loads of fun.

W/ a combined monthly income of $800 for two people, it's going to a miserable, meager existance.

Dorms aren't really cheaper, just more convenient.

I think having to be home at 10pm throughout my summer and that my mom dictates when I get my hair cut kind of makes you want to move out.
Yes I live in the UP of MI, so I'll say again, apartment rent DOES NOT cost as much as you say. I am more wondering about other kind of costs and any estmations on those.

The persons on this forum saying you can't, must have grown up with silver spoons WAY up their asses.

If this same question was surveyed to a bunch of old folks in the mall, the stats would be total opposite. My gramp used to wake up around 7-8am every morning, and he even sometimes stay up late til 11ish PM at night.
I myself am a night owl.![]()

Hell, I live in lower SW (st. joseph) and out in the country you can find 1BR's CHEAP ($250) or even 3-4 bedroom houses across the river in benton harbor for $400 flat.
That said, if you can find a place for even $350, consider this:
Rent: $350
Food for 2 guys: $300 easy, figure $400 now that you want to party
Electric, phone, cable, broadband: $125
Water, gas, trash: $20
Right there is....nearly $800 and if you buy beer it better be on a credit card. I make a little more personally-on my first job right now, but it's only paying $11.50/hr at a 37.5/hr workweek. Tough for me to live on with a $450 rent. I couldn't even afford a phone line or internet until my father paid for it as part of a second (work at home) job I have through one of his consulting businesses. It's not fun.
