is it fair to get fired for this.....

Perfectly legal. And "fair" has nothing to do with it. Life isn't fair, get used to it.

It used to be socially taboo to talk about income. It should still be that way. It does nothing but foster envy.

its super bad for morale and can cause all kinds of problems within a work group. i don't see anything unfair about it. and yes its perfectly legal.

One of the things that will surely get you fired (if caught) where I work, is discussing salary.
thats besides the usual bad things.. like taking 3 hour lunches, not doing your work, etc.

LAWSUIT

Aren't unionized employees usually paid the same wage, dependent on years worked? not skill.

yes.

few years ago there was a morgan stanley analyst who got fired the day after he was quoted on the nytimes, bragging about his salary.

I suspect the employer has more reasons to fire him than that. That's probably all your "freind" told you.

Talking about salary can really mess up a work place. Also, it is established as being rude just from social president.

Usually. If you're in a union and you want to see what someone else is making you can usually just look in the contract and see what their making, what raise they will get and when.

Why is it so bad to discuss one's salary? If you're doing the same amount of work, then should get paid the same. If you're getting paid less than someone, there's probably a reason and you should find out what the reason is and work on it. What other reason should one person be making more/less than another, other than what they've done at work?
