Is it ever OK for a 23 year old to date a 17 year old?

Date? No. Screw? Only if it's in violation of statutory rape laws for the state.

Here in CA it's 18. Many states have the minimum age as 16-17.
However, it IS a social taboo, raising many questions, as well as presenting some challenges:

- What is wrong with the girl that she can't date someone in her own age range (16-19)?
- What is wrong with the guy that he's dating a high schooler?
- How do these two people relate? A LOT happens within a person between 17-23.
- What kind of activities can these two do together? The younger one can't drink for 4 years.

I wouldn't go so far as to say ALWAYS, but you're usually talking about a significant difference in emotional maturity, here.. A 23 year old's priorities and worldview are usually different from those of a 17 year old.

At 23 I was a lamb. Most 17 year old girls at the time would eat me for lunch (not in that way!).

I was making out with this girl at a party last year (I was 22). Found out after we hooked up that she was 17 AND one of my HS teacher's nieces... oops..

When I was 23 I dated a 17 year old (for a few months before she turned 18). I didn't plan it, it just happened. Her parents loved me even though I was 5 years older than she. THey felt I was much more responsible than the idiots she had been with until she met me. Her mom even talked to me about getting her on the pill so we wouldn't have an accident....that was really weird. Anyway, I don't think it is always bad but the difference in maturity can lead to some interesting problems. Needless to say that relationship didn't last but it was a very memorable one for me and in the same situation I wouldn't hesitate to do it all over again....but luckily I will never be that young again so I have nothing to worry about.

I think it's kinda funny... That is only a 6 year difference... People who get married are often times 4-10 years older than their spouse... Morally right, depends on the culture. Legally right, depends on the laws...

Sure . . . why not? Only her brother would care.

:D

It depends on the persons involved. Many factors - including emotional maturity - are involved. Many states allow for it at age 16 or 17 as does most of the rest of the (non-sexually repressed) world. What is magical about age 18? Some 25 year olds should not date - anyone.

I dated a 17 year old when I was 23.
It was probably one of the best, most normal relationships I have had.

When my daughter is 17 years old in a few years and you, a 23 year old boy (man?, questionable), come sniffing around her you will only get one opportunity to leave and never come back before you suffer severe bodily harm.

Most of the replies to your thread have been from adolescents. I am speaking to you from a fathers viewpoint.

Well, I guess if it's legal there's nothing wrong. It's entirely their own business, IMO.

It depends.

I'm 21, and my girlfriend is 17...

It seems perfectly normal to us.

Just like Ronstang said, her parents are actually pretty thankful she found me.. rather than some of the other lovely individuals that live around her...

Happydaddy - Yeah, and you damn dads need to backoff a little. :p Her dad is having some problems watching his little girl grow up, so to speak. He doesen't dislike me.. He just won't let me stay the night there. lol.. even though we get to sleep with eachother down here at her moms. lol.... It's pretty funny, actually.

my parents are 8 years apart, and started dating when my mom was 17. Both sides of my family had known each other for about 20 years at that time, so it's different than some random 25 year old dating a 17 year old. They got together because my dad started helping my mom with her geometry :)

i'm 8 yrs older than my wife. but she was 21 and i was 29 when we met so i guess it's not the same as the question.

my wife was a senior in college vs a 17 yr old would normally be a senior in high school.

<< Is this ALWAYS a bad thing? >>

It's only up for the people who are dating to decide.. I try not to pass much judgement on someone who is dating someone younger or vice versa... they obviously have gotten together because they like each other is all i say to myself.. it's strange to most people, but obviously not to them i guess! :p

Eli, it is because of overage adolescents like you that you would only step foot on my property or see my daughter just once. There would be no second warnings.

Don't get me wrong. I understand why overage boys like you date teeny boppers. You are insecure and the only females you can dominate are underage girls. If you were a man, you would be dating women of your own age, experience and maturity.
