At my university, most asians will not hold the door for you, say thank you when you hold it for them, or say excuse me or sorry when they bump into you.

I'm very curious to know if it is asians in general that act like this, or if it is just the foreign students who come here from other countries and maybe don't practice such courtesies for others because they arent aware they exist here.

I noticed this in college a few years ago too. However, I noticed that it was the Eastern Europeans acting like that.

I haven't seen people holding doors open for anyone outside the U.S. But in the U.S I have seen people of all colors, race and nationalities hold doors open or thank people that have held a door open for them. I think the Asians you saw have probably not spent enough time in NA to understand that it is rude of them to not thank someone or to not hold a door open for someone that is following right behind them. Once they realize that, they usually do it too. Asians are not stupid, though a lot of people find that difficult to accept

I'm being closed minded by asking a question?

You're being closed minded by assuming that foreign people can easily assimilate to your cultural norms. You're closed minded cuz you don't realize that they might have the same values as you in their home country. You're being closed minded cuz you're expecting them to hold the same values as you, and if they don't they are "rude". How are they suppose to know that it might not be courteous if don't say thank you.

But when Americans go to a foreign country and dont know the local customs and manage to make asses of themselves, they are immediately labeled ugly Americans, rather than being excused as unknowing of local practices.

Even people from different parts of the US have different concepts of what is polite (I figured that out when I moved to CA :p )

Plus, whatever happened to "when in Rome...."? Part of the point of studying abroad is learn another culture.

In our society it is rude to not hold doors and say thank you wether or not you know our customs.

My question was asking if my observation was of asians in general or if it was a group who just didn't understand some of our cultural norms. Nowhere did I say that I expect them to be like me, nor did I say I thought less of them because of it. You're just assuming things for the sake of stiring up this thread.

Exactly, but when you study abroad, you have a basic understanding of some aspects of the culture. Its like you jump in head first with no concept of their culture.

so how many asians = "most asians" at your school?

generalizing that all asians do this due to a "couple" that you've encountered is retarded for obvious reasons. even asking the question is ignorant.

If you have a problem, why don't you confront the people causing you the problems?

I've had this experience with foreigners as well. It's just not something they learned in their culture. It's the same reason they don't tip well in restaurants. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not something they do, they have other ways of showing respect.

for instance, in belgium, they are impressed if you greet a business contact with three kisses on the cheek. If you don't do this, they know you must be a foreigner. No one will call a Belgian a racist if he wonders why foreign americans don't kiss three times on the cheek. It's just not something americans/foreginers do in their culture.

Wrong.

He asked a question, he didn't assume anything. If he already had an assumption, he wouldn't bother asking the question.

If you're suggesting that asking questions is wrong, I'd like to see how you learn. In addition, questions are usually based on ignorance. There's nothing wrong with that.

ig·no·rant Audio pronunciation of "ignorant" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (gnr-nt)
adj.

1. Lacking education or knowledge.
2. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge: an ignorant mistake.
3. Unaware or uninformed.

Hence, if you don't know the answer, you ask a question.
