I comes down to luck of the draw, but you probably wouldn't notice the difference between the two in terms of stability. The accepted standard for memory around here is Crucial. If you get a great deal through auction on a generic module and it works great, more power to you. Personally, I think you'll lose the auction with any bet less than $80 (maybe more). At that price, I'd rather have the Crucial module, thank you. Less than that, and I might take my chances, depending on the seller's references.
Finally, confirm that your notebook will accept 256MB modules. Not all do.
