The iPod has become too much of a flashy status symbol for me. It's WAY past cool and cult technology.

I am very happy with my rugged little AAA-powered Rio! Cali 256 with 512MB SD card. Does everything I need it to do, and best of all, it doesn't stand out.

As a gift to someone, especially someone who isn't a geek, it's the safest bet.

if it's a gift, the ipod is prob the best bet. however, i just replaced my ipod mini for a zen micro. initially i had purchased a rio carbon because i couldn't find anyone that carried it, but finally found on at compusa. the carbon is going back today - it would have been superior to the ipod in ever way if it weren't for 2 idiotic features: (1) dragging and dropping songs into a previously created playlist completely erases that playlist it and replaces it w/ the new song. (2) you can't scroll/view songs in a playlist - you have to click "next" until you find a particular song you want to listen to.

I have owned a Creative Labs Nomad IIc, a Creative Labs Zen, and an iPod.

iPod wins hand down on everything, especially the interface.

No matter what you go with check out Red Chair Software for some after market software packages that I find MUCH easier to use than anything that comes standard.

If someone asked for an MP3 player and you bought them something other than an iPod, it'd be like buying a GeForce card for at ATer that asked for a Radeon. Sort of kinda close, but not what they really wanted.

not really, if he just asked for a "mp3 player" he is open to any of them, it woudl be like saying i want a new graphic card, and NOT specifying what one/brAND

In the end it really is a great player, can't say it's not.

A person who does the research and picks an alternative is probably the cleverer chap.

Ipod does what it does quite well.

Do others do it better on the road? Yes.

Do others do it better when it comes to software? No.

I wanted simplicity and quality and they gave it to me.
