Is interracial marriage a sin? (religious question)

To be specific, I'm looking for bibilical references that forbids interracial marriage.

I've heard some people expressing that view and then bring out the book. But they couldn't give me any actual passages that may have said such thing. In fact, most of it deals with Christians shouldn't marry non-Christians.

So far, I'm pretty much convinced that according to the bible, there isn't anything wrong with it as long as they're both Christians.

Anyone have any insights?

If you want to read something in a book you can, no matter whether it's the Bible or the telephone book.
Even holy books which specifically state that race does not matter if they follow the religion are thrown aside over such matters, culture and prejudice is used instead, and often explained through a religious point of view.

That is correct, the Bible treat everyone as equal but there are Christians and Non-Christians.

You are correct Shelly. To my knowledge, there are no Bible verses that prohibit interacial marriage. There are, however, passages that warn Christians not to marry a nonChristian. People may read the Old Testament laws of not marrying "daughters of foreign gods" and may unfortunately translate those to interacial marriage today.

Interacial marriage is not a sin. How could it be?

God created the earth and the heavens, he created man, therefore he had to have created all races of people. Jesus loves us all, and wnats us all to love each other as he loves us. If 2 people love each other, and are happy, committed to each other, and work to build their love and relationship, then who cares. Unconditional love and acceptance is not a sin.

Heck no! If one believes the Bible as the literal word of God, all races are descended from the same place anyway.

Hmm... for what it's worth, I'm a christian and my girlfriend is somewhat agnostic. The religion isn't so much the issue as the fact that I'm chinese and she's black. Her parents are okay with me, but my parents ARE NOT okay with her. Sigh...

That's not true at all.

Galatians 3:28-29
There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one in Jesus Christ. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Also, When He says that "I knew you in the womb", He does not say "I knew the white man in the womb", or, "I knew the Black man in the womb". He knows and loves all of us, God loves variety, why else would he create so many people in the world?

He also has a sense of humor, look at the platypus! :D

You parents may have grown up in a different time/culture. It is up to us to change the world.
There is only one master race on earth, The HUMAN race, that is made up of all colors, nationalities, etc. What could make this world so great is that we all have strengths, and we all have weaknesses, but, working together we all can compliment each other and overcome the weaknesses, and make our strenghts even greater.

As far as my experience goes, I grew up in a catholic family, and catholic's have a lot of rules....but I've never heard of race getting in the way.

My aunt got married a few years ago, and wanted it to be a catholic wedding. Unfortunately that didn't happen, not because her husband was a middle-easterner, but because her husband was a non-practicing muslim.

Someone in my family suspected that if he was American, the church would have been more open to it....but I don't think that's the case. Either way, the behavior of the church regarding the matter really agitated my grandfather. ;(

Those laws were put in place by God, because every race had different 'gods'. God didn't want the Israelites to intermingle worship of the one true God with the worship of other gods. He knew that if His followers intermarried with other nations, it was very likely that they would start to mix religions. During that time in history, when one nation would capture another, one of the first things they would do is cart off all the youngest, brightest males and send them back to their country. They would take some of their own people, and some people from other countries that they had already conquered, and send them to the newly conquered lands. The idea was that if they were mixed together, they would intermarry, and lose their sense of nationalism. The Israelite captives didn't intermarry. They paid great attention to the fact that they were the children of God, and kept themselves racially pure. Of course, the ones who were left behind during the captivity didn't do the same thing. They married these other races that were moved in, and when the captivity ended, there was a lot of enmity between the 'pure' Israelites, and the 'half-breeds' such as the Samaritans. There is a long history of stress between both nations.

What the hell are you talking about why would interracial marriages be a sin? I thought that in Gods eyes all men and women were created equal...

I think it depends on the priest. My uncle tried to get married in the Catholic church that my whole family goes to, but the priest who was there at the time wouldn't marry him and his fiance because they didn't go to church. But they ended up getting married in a Catholic church in a different town. Weird...

I'm pretty sure Moses (and I know some OT patriarchs) had "interracial" marriages. I don't think it could be considered a "sin" as such.

Later in Jewish history they had strict rules that forbade marriage with non-Israelites. Whenever someone broke the rule, they inevitably started building statues to the outside mate's pagan gods and the God had to smite a bunch of people for it. Some of that continues today in strict jewish families.

In Christianity, the advice is not to marry someone who isn't a Christian, but it's more out of practicality and wisdom than because it's morall wrong (sinful).
