Gulftown to be sold at 999$ 6C/12T vs 975 4/8, only about 3Q later, x1.5 logical capacity, at the same price...

they could've taken few hundreds less knowing the hex core is soon to arrive..

This thread is so derailed that it's now driving through the Rio Grande. It's time to give it a rest.

3Q is quite a long time away don't you think?

Gulftown will be lower-clocked too (probably) so 1.5x capacity is probably a little overstated. If people didn't mind paying $1000 for a 975 now, when they could OC a 920 higher than a stock 975, they will probably gladly drop another $1000 for the next top chip.

I have no sympathy for someone who choses to pay $999 for a premium chip only because it has an unlocked multiplier when they could have gotten a 920 D0 for $200-300.

If they can afford it, why not? I can say that I have no sympathy for someone who spends $200,000 on a car when you can buy a perfectly serviceable vehicle for less than a tenth of that, but really that is just because I can't afford a $200,000 car. :\

Seriously, if I was making bank, why the hell would I not want to buy the best and most expensive?

Either you're to stupid to realize your part will be worth nothing soon (enough) there after, or you just don't care about that 1k.

Either way, you're still getting ripped off.

yeah, it is supposed to arrive at 3.33.

he basically is saying, he wouldn't mind that if he had had the money, though, it isn't necessarily true to everyone who bought it,
the 975 isn't some "proof of ability" by the manufacturer and is being sold like any other chip, just where the price,
is higher...

3Q is quite a long time away don't you think?
not enough to issue a hi end chip at a top of the line price, when your aware your going to issue another -supposedly- better one, only short while after wards at the same amount.
they could've priced the Gulftown at 1200$ or so,
or make the 975 750$ before..

it really smells like Intel wanted to take all the money it could get.

just saying so.

So why then again would you complain that something better is being released 9 months later at the same price you paid for your oversexed toy?
Why not just buy a new one again instead of complaining?

Somebody call the Whambulance? ;)

Yes, Intel does that. Quite often.

I don't seem to recall this much garnishing of teeth when AMD was releasing the FX-51, FX-53, FX-55, FX-57, FX-59, and FX-60 chips.

don't get the wrong impression here, nobody is against Intel, rather on the contrary, they lead with marvelous processors, where few would say otherwise.
thought, they do have some sympathy for extra cash, and recent law suits just as well add to that.
AMD might have done so as well, though it does seem quite radical, releasing a quad EX only 9 month's before you release an Hex core with the same retail price,
though, if it's all right with u,
it's fine,
don't u think they would've made the same profit selling the earlier line cheaper ? probably lots more people would've buy, and it would've seem better now...

If you are usuing high-end watercooling or other exotic cooling solutions, you want the best. That would be the 975 right now.

if u have the money,
you'd probably even get one .
comparatively for what it offers, the new 980EX does really worth the price.

Since when was a 975 purchaser not being f*cked to begin with? Or any "Extreme" CPU for that matter?

OP - sorry you had to learn the harsh reality of product cycles on a $1000 chip. 9 months is pretty long for a top of the line CPU.
thanks, though, never leaned it..
just caring for the others ;).

If I was filthy rich, I would not care. However, I'm not filthy rich, so that's why the most recent CPU I bought was a Core i5 750, and not a Core i7 975 (not that it would fit in the mini ITX mobo I just ordered).

Either way, I think you are out of line calling someone "stupid" just because their purchasing habits do not coincide with yours.

So why then again would you complain that something better is being released 9 months later at the same price you paid for your oversexed toy?

I don't complain and I do buy a new one again. What are you talking about?

Of course I can't afford EE chips, but I upgrade so often that I keep all my local gamer buddies fed with little-used recent gear. Heck, I just "side-graded" my LAN party rig from a micro ATX Core i7 920 (see my "for sale" thread in my sig) so that I can buy a mini ITX socket 1156 setup. My main rig gets upgraded annually.

So who's complaining about something better being released? It ain't me! Even if I can't afford the best, I know that "something better" being released means better prices/performance all-around.

This doesn't surprise me.

I remember back when Conroe EE was released in 2006 for $999 within months there was a Kentsfield quad core EE priced identical to that earlier dual core.

theres something higher then i have for the consumer?

ZAP... u hiding a GPU under your pillow that i havent heard about?

Dude u think this is bad?

Can we flash back to the 965? 3 months later intel goes HELLO D0 stepping which the 920 killed the flagship 965 only because of a different stepping.
Then later intel changes the stepping on the 965... but 6 months later... so guys were forced to get 975 3 months AFTER the 920 D0 launch.

I think thats more of an intel "Lets F around with the consumer" logic then gulftown ever will be.
