Is it wrong to consider buying a new printer instead of buying toner for my existing printer just on the principle that buying a new printer is cheaper than buying toner? 😕

Which printer? I buy refill kits for my Brother HL-2170W.

My current printer is a Lexmark C543dn. Refills are essentially no cheaper than a new toner cartridge, thanks to Lexmark and their god damn chips. Thankfully the printer only cost me $56, brand new in the box.

I don't think so.. with how ridiculous those things are priced (ink, toner) if it makes financial sense then go ahead.

New printers usually come with "starter" cartridges that have about 1/3 the toner as the retail cartridges. If you're thinking long term, it's better to prioritize cost per page over immediate financial outlay. (i.e. if the printer costs 2/3 what the toner cartridges do, but has 1/3 the actual toner, than it's really twice as expensive.)

You really got that printer for $56 bucks? That was a deal. *hubba*

But here's a refill kit for $46.

What the hell is wrong with you OP! Buy a fucking Brother brand laser printer or HP brand inkjet printer and enjoy cheap ass hell refills from Amazon!

This.

But I'm with you - used to think/do the same thing. Now I don't have a printer. The ink would dry out because I rarely used it. Which just aggravated me when I did want to use it!

If you don't use it often, it's not worth it. If you do use it often, it's worth getting a laser printer.

Yes, I really got it for $56.

Problem with your refill kit link is that they don't include the chips. The chips go for about $29/each, instantly raising the price of your refill kit to $162. Given return program toner cartridges run around $40 each, the refill kits offer little to no cost advantage - that is unless you never have to re-chip them once you do it initially, which I have never gotten the answer to in all of my google-travels thusfar.

I'd look into getting a new printer that doesn't require a circus routine to add new toner. You might have to pay a little more than rock bottom, but it'll save you money over the long tem. That's assuming you actually need a printer. Personally, I've given up on them. Like Blieb, my printers go to hell before the ink is finished, so I quit buying them.

Interesting, I've been looking at that exact same printer. :hmm:

its just junk, the problem isnt the idea
but then ur stuck with yet another old printer
which is worth -$15 or so
and u got it hanging around
you could put some rolly eyes from craft store on it but i imagine u would get sick of all these little techno critters staring at you

As others have said, do you actually need one? I haven't had a printer at my house for at least the last 8 years. I haven't missed it.

Lexmark is bad mojo. They've had a reputation for nonsense for a long time now. I'd get HP or Brother.

I have a Brother mono laser right now and it's pretty good. Also had HP mono's in the past with good experience. Looking to buy my first color laser now.
