I'm definitely going laser with my next printer. I have an inkjet right now that has become completely clogged due to the fact that I don't need to print except on rare occasions. It's basically like having a car who's engine ha seized up due to lack of oil. Add to that that it won't print black and white if it's low on magenta. Ridiculous.

set the cartridges in shallow plate with a little puddle of water with heads submerged for a few min, i read it somewhere a few yrs ago, and it definitely works bc mine are always drying out too

Oh shit really? You havent the hundred threads here and the thousands of articles online?

http://blogs.computerworld.com/16162/hp_explains_why_printer_ink_is_so_expensive

For the most part its the teeny tiny nozzles which spray micro droplets. If there was any sort of junk in the fluid it would completely clog the nozzle. Printer ink needs RETARDED amounts of filtering. Its cleaner than I.V. solution.

Also theres the whole supply/demand thing.

In fact much like a PS3 vs. the cost of its games, its all about what consumers are willing to pay. Most people are fine with buying a 50 dollar printer (which used to cost 500) and spending a couple hundred a year on ink.

😕 IV saline costs a couple of dollars a bag.

As for supply/demand is there a massive shortage of ink?

I don't think most people are OK with the price of ink, it's just there isn't really an alternative.

Has there ever been a price fixing investigation as the competition in the market doesn't seem to be affecting price at all.

And that blog is just HP justifying their cost without really giving a reason.

I keep using my brother inkjet because the ink carts last me for hundreds of pages and I get them from ebay for $4 each.

I pay less than a dollar each for mine when I combine with a coupon.

Mine may have been less the last time I ordered because I bought a large order of them but I figure they are cheap enough.

$4 is definitely cheap enough, especially compared to standard ink pricing. My HP printer just gets refills from Costco now, but even that is $8 each for black and color (2 cartridges).

Since everybody else is sharing; Brother Hl-2070N in the loft for wireless access. (It's got an adapter) and a Brother Hl-3040CN in my office.

Yes, toner is cheap. Yes, it's awesome.

Wait.....a.....minute.... hmmm..

Okay peeps.. What about a Brother/HP All-in-one as a replacement for my printer/scanner.... Currently I use a crappy HP Throw away PhotoSmart Plus but only to scan. I than print the stuff I scan to the HP 1320tn. I DO NOT PRINT PHOTOS, EVER (I do scan them though, some high, some low quality.. whatever I need & I scan PDF's..). Perhaps a recommendation from those knowledgeable in this thread for a replacement to kill both birds with one stone. Again, I only need to print utilizing toner but would be cool to include the scanning functionality with glass/feeder options within a new printer. I don't want to break the bank but I also would like to get something quality to last a long time (its for home use..) and not rape me on toner refill costs...

I recommend buying an outgoing model business class laser. Yes they are a little more expensive, but they have low consumable costs, often come with full size toner cartridges, are fast, and don't dryout. Plus they typically have built in networking, etc. Either way buying a printer without looking into comsumable cost is a huge fail.

Wow those look perfect for my needs... Thanks for the recommendations. I will definitely be getting one or the other.

And third party toners are cheap, 30 bux for the 8000 page one and 50 for the drum which is good for 20k pages. These are for my printer but I imagine they are similarly priced. And these are Canadian prices. i am sure US prices are better.

I specifically picked a model that has high capacity toner option. The paper is the expensive part at this kind of prices.
