I just bought $40 worth of 80/20 from Food Lion this week. They have it on sale for $1.99/pound. I cleaned that place out because it's so expensive otherwise.

I've noticed ground beef climbing, too.

Now I'm thinking to myself "why buy ground beef for $4/lb when I can get organic, grass fed bison from a local farm for $6.40/lb?"

Bison is not beef... though it taste similar.
It is also usually pretty lean.

At Whole Foods they have 7% for I guess around 7 dollars a pound and there is a sign that tells you how many hours ago it was ground. I don't buy packaged hamburger any more because it is constantly being recalled for killing people.

It is? Where are you buying your beef, some backwater market in BFE Mexico?

I've not had a problem, nor noticed any mass recalls of the packaged ground beef I've been eating. Don't always get it, but it works well enough for cheap meals (when not making straight-up hamburgers).

I know it's slightly off topic, but you should try making your ragu with something other than ground beef. A lot of Italians are using ground meat now, but that's a shortcut for more classic preparations (of course, every family has a variation). 50/50 pancetta and cubed up skirt steak works. The skirt steak will shred as it cooks in the liquid.

veal + pancetta = win

moony: its kinda silly to stop eating meats over the FEW deaths there have been. consider the millions of pounds sold (and eaten) the odds on dyeing is extreamy low. you have higher risk walking to the butcher to buy your beef (or driving)

but i agree. buy from a local butcher!

I don't buy ground beef often, but yes, it is more expensive than it was a year or two ago.

Most meat is quite expensive here in Seattle - considerably more than when I lived in PA. Of course, prices could have gone up in the four years I've lived here, but I believe ground beef was about $1.99 in PA and $3.99 when I moved to Seattle.

I have my beef price limit before eating young people (less toxins accumulated than old) would look tempting. :)

I don't know about beef but I noticed that bacon seems to be much more expensive than it was a couple years ago.

Local chain it's 3.69/lb, local butcher shop it's 2.49/lb(has cheaper steaks, etc. too-cash only business though).

Might be corn prices, but that would not explain why other cuts of meat have not gone up as much.

Fucking corn. It's time to bring the slime debate to our sodas and get that syrup shit known as HFCS out of our soft drinks, we can call it 'corn slime' though I wouldn't even categorize it as corn. But hey, I'll pay a little extra to get back to basics with the things I eat/drink.

I don't think we'll ever get back to basics, not in the developed world.

The food industry is so convoluted and messy, that in the developed world, there are so many things people probably would be best advised not to investigate further, just for the peace of mind. It's pretty much all *safe*, but, so far from "the basics" that one would be very surprised what basic food really looks and tastes like. Me, I would prefer the basics 99% of the time, but I must admit I like what some of the modern foods taste like today.

But the basics are also so costly, and with the rise in severe weather going to play havoc on the food industry, the rise in transportation costs, and the rise of global food demand (populations and increase in demand for "modern foodstuffs" and the peddlers of such)... AND the rise of food sources being used for worthless purposes that are not "consumption of nutrients", I cannot imagine there will be any looking back... rather, looking forward for newer ways to make the industry even more convoluted. :(

Oh, and add on to that government subsidies, grants, and in general various policies that help push crop selection for optimal profits, and we'll only go deeper into the rabbit hole.
As usual, government policy makers have zero foresight and never take into account all planning considerations, which leaves a mess even in as short of time as a decade or two after policies are enacted. No due diligence and long-term planning, which has got to be a motto of government these days (at least, considering the myriad variables that honestly need to be factored into such long-term plays), results in the majority of the messes we see today.

The demand for convenience is also a nasty cog in this whole system. The less you do with foodstuffs, the less you can keep some of it around. That, and cheap and convenient food (and rising demand of such) means the peddlers of such will need to take up even more of the product from the main suppliers, which leaves the more basic and higher-quality products in shorter supply and thus higher cost - further fueling the desire to skip such and eat cheap, which perpetuates this whole cycle.

Corn syrup is chemically no different from many sugars. I frankly do not see the issue with that one. Pink slime has an antibacterial agent (ammonium hydroxide) in it that is known to be harmful.

If you want to say sugar is harmful, fine. But don't single out a product that is no more harmful that "natural" cane sugar. Which is simply sugar refined from a plant species other than corn.

FWIW, I mentioned corn prices because in the last 5 years or so, much of the U.S. corn crop has been bought up to make ethanol, resulting in a price increase for other corn based products (i.e., feed).
