Is God just another cop?

Not only a cop, but He is judge, jury, and attorney, too. Best to throw yourself on the mercy of the court, since you can't bribe Him and a plea of "not guilty" isn't going to cut it, since He knows what you've done. ;)

Look at it this way. If someone you know had a million dollars and you wanted it, and you dont believe God. I told you to kill him and you can have the money..you wont be caught by anyone if you do this, then you wouldnt have any problem doing it right? The reason I say this is because you would have to have a conscience for this to bother you right? Well basically a conscience is that little voice hanging over your shoulder saying you will have to answer for this later (insert god here) but since you dont believe in god and no one is going to catch you then blow his brains out and take the money.

You hear about kids going out and killing a store clerk to get into a gang. Do you think they believe in god ( NO ) They have no conscience what so ever. They live for the moment. No one will catch me.You say you dont believe but at some point in your life if you ever were introduced to the Christian religeon you probably have that little voice over your shoulder weather you admit it or not.

So is god a police man you bet and hes everywhere and sees everything. I believe because I want to. If I am right and you are wrong..you are in trouble. If you are right them what have I lost ( nothing ) by trying to live a christian life.

In your life on this earth, God does not act as a cop. He acts as a lawmaker/philosopher, offering a set of rules that if you attempt to follow in humility will lead to a relationship with the most profound philosopher and generous benefactor.

In the life after death He acts as judge and award committee or jury and jailer.

This reminds me of a dream I had not so long ago.... (I hear the collective sigh of oh, no, here she goes again... )

I dreamed that I entered a room in which God, in the form of the Holy Spirit, was going to judge me.

I was really worried at first, because my MIL was there, and boy is she judgemental. She was like, Ha! Now you are going to get it! but I knew I had tried my best so I just prepared to accept my fate.

The first thing that happened was that celestial instruments played songs of my life... Somehow, I knew what each one was about.

The next thing that happened was I got a computer printout of my 'judgement', which was sort of like an employee review sheet.

The paper said " You are a selfless and generous giver " and the only admonishment was "Farts loudly".

Who says God doesn't have a good sense of humor? :D

Guess God doesn't want me to eat gas producing foods.... :D :D

(Actually, I think it means I am a sometimes too unapologetic about my human weaknesses. ;) )

3putt, you're an ass man. Just because someone doesn't believe in god doesn't mean they have no conscience or morals. That's just fscked up, I hope you're not under the impression that everyone that thinks differently from you has no morals or conscience. Congratulations, you've disgusted me already this morning.

Wrong. Some of us have have this thing called "ethics", and actually it's kind of scary to me that you need to believe in a god to prevent you from going on a crime/killing/hedonistic rampage.

"You hear about kids going out and killing a store clerk to get into a gang. Do you think they believe in god ( NO )"

That one of the most stupidist things I've ever heard 3Putt, if I was one to make generalisations I would assume religious people couldn't think for themselves, after reading such a statement as yours.

Having a conscious has nothing to do with being religious, its do to with having the ability to empathise.

Just about every episode of mass slaughter in human history was actually done by people who were deeply religious - look at the seige of Acre (or was it tyre) by the Crusaders, where they massacred 40000 'infidels' (even though about half were Greek Orthadox, the Crusaders just assumed they were all infidels), just because Saladin was late with the ransom gold. Because they were considered infidels, the crusaders (who were deeply religious, & were there to get their sins absolved, so they could go to heaven) could not empathise with them & as such killing 'infidels' was no big a deal - a bit like Nazis killing Jews.

Isla,
If God didn't want you to eat gas producing foods it's likely the printout would have said "too much" rather than "loudly". If ever you accidentally let one rip in public He will be watching thru His celestial one-way mirror laughing His wotsit off.

I hope you are right, because that is the side of Him that I like best... the Loving, Understanding Father! :)

hey Isla,
did ya know that many thousands of years ago, the image of god was seen as the loving mother who is the creator (birth). over the past few thousand years it has shifted towards a patriachal image. do you think god is a woman?

When you disagree with the very religous i always think of this. "Never argue with a fool, people might not know the difrence." Murphy.
To explain it: When you argue with someone that won't listen people will see you as the fool. While i am not really big into the whole church thing i have my ideas about religion. I don't force them on anyone, i always listen to what someone has to say untill they saw i am wrong or try to push me into something.
God is not a cop. If he is "the gate keeper" (flash back) then he will be more of a security officer/bouncer. Good luck everyone.

GOD IS A REPUBLICAN AND SANTA CLAUS IS A DEMOCRAT
by P. J. O'Rourke
  • God is an elderly or, at any rate, middle-aged male , a stern fellow, patriarchal rather than paternal and a great believer in rules and regulations. He holds men strictly accountable for their actions. He has little apparent concern for the material well-being of the disadvantaged. He is politically connected, socially powerful and holds the mortgage on literally everything in the world. God is difficult. God is unsentimental. It is very hard to get into God's heavenly country club.

Santa Claus is another matter. He's cute. He's non threatening. He's always cheerful. And he loves animals. He may know who's been naughty and who's been nice, but he never does anything about it. He gives everyone everything they want without thought of a quid pro quo. He works hard for charities, and he's famously generous to the poor.

Santa Claus is preferable to God in every way but one: There is no such thing as Santa Claus.

I see that Ornery got a lump of coal for Christman and is off making up fictions. Santa is as real as the god you made up so you'd better watch out, he's comming to town real soon.

Convex that was just a hypothetical. Ok you can have ethics and morals but what are they based on? Also I guess I just had to vent a little. It seems that alot of threads on this board bash christian beliefs, I see alot of " Its the year 2000 why dont ppl realize that theres no god" and hardly anything is said.

I see God as having no gender, but it is just easier to refer to 'it' as male in this society. It is pleasing to the patriarchy....

I grow weary of hearing that religion is the cause for war. There must be some truth to it. I would argue that most wars can be attributed to men not following the simple philosophy of 'love your neighbor', or to put it in a different way by men not having a righteous (right with God) religion.

Reported War Casualties (All sides)

Civil War ~ 1 million
World War I ~ 9.5 million
World War II ~ 57 million
