Is global warming really _that_ bad...

Wouldn't the world be a nicer place if it was warmer? There'd be a lot less clothes and a lot more fun to be had. We'd all be so much tanner. Coldness only makes people bitter.

And for you non-believers I only have two words for you...

Come on! C'mooooooooooooooooooooooon.. 😉

But...but...what about sledding? I like sledding. If it stayed warm all the time, there'd be no more sledding or snow or snowball fights. 🙁

Uh, dude, if it keeps up like it is, eventually if we don't stop it , it could cause the polar ice caps to melt and then we'd have a lot of trouble on our hands, it'd be like that movie waterworld.

most of the ice at the polar ice caps is floating, which means its already displaced its weight in water so the sea levels wouldn't rise that much.

the NYTimes published something once saying that global warming would make the SW united states a green and lush environ, which is certainly an improvement. too bad it we can't make an earthquake happen to take care of LA.

well if it warms so much all the ice from the north and south poles, etc melts to water a lot of people would die and would lose a lot of land because of it, and the world is already overcrowded in parts and well, that just wouldn't be good.

<<most of the ice at the polar ice caps is floating, which means its already displaced its weight in water so the sea levels wouldn't rise that much.>>

Exactly. Floating ice is 90% (roughly) under water, so it is displacin nearly all of its volume. When water freezes, it expands, so a given volume of ice yields a smaller volume of water. Combine these two facts and we see that there isn't going to be much change in water level.

The concept of global warming was created so that stupid hippies would have something to protest that was completely out of their control while in between protesting lions killing prey in Africa with their claws and teeth instead of with tranquilizer guns and people shaving their faces/legs, etc because it hurts the hair.

Considering the New York City area was once a tropical climate and Kansas and most of the Midwest was at the bottom of a big sea...well...I'd say we're just seeing the natural warm-up from the last Ice Age.

<< There is absolutely no scientific proof that global warming even exists except as a natural cycle. >>

Didn't the tobacco companies use that excuse for decades?

The problem is, we might not be able to prove it until it's too late to prevent some unpleasant consequnces. If we cut emissions of greenhouse gases now it might be unecessary but certainly won't be harmful, and as a by-product we'll have cleaner air to breathe.

Global warming is the least of our worries. Did you know that the continents are moving as fast as 3 inches per year! At that rate, when the continents colide in like a million years, we'll have a new range of mountains between america and africa!

Of course a Killer Asteroid will have taken us out long before then 🙂

oh god! there's no time!! WE'VE GOT TO DO SOMETHING!!! FAST!

Have people posting here read any of the global warming artilces in major scientific journals? How can you say its not happening or is insignifigant there is enourmous evidence out there supporting global warming. There is evidence that the current cycling of C02 levels is not natural. natural 100ppm changes in CO2 occur over periods of around 50,000 years. THe latest 100ppm change in atmospheric CO2 levels occured in 70 years.

BTW most of the sea level rises happen due to thermal expansion of the water itself not the additional water provided by the melted icecaps.

Global climate change is a very pressing concern current climate projections see an increase of global surface temperatures by about 10-12 degreees farenheit. One of the major problems with predicting how a temp change that large would affect climate has to due with chaos theory.

Wrong. There are specific *reasons* why the SouthWest United States is a desert, and if it were changed into a "lush, green" environment, everything else would be drastically changed. It's called an ecosystem, you probably learned about it in Biology 1 Freshman year in High School.

Pull your head out of the sand and the stick out of your ass and you'll cool off quicker.

i know lots of people that are ALWAYS complaining of being cold

Has the desert of the SouthWest United States always been a desert? Check your basic history and then tell me why you can find fossils of sea creatures there.

Once upon a time, the Southwest was underwater. A LONG time ago. Like dinosaur time. I believe that ecosystem is no longer relevent. The reason there is a desert there now is a little thing called the Rocky Mountains. The Rockies create a moisture barrier that makes the desert to the east. So... its been a long time since it has been anything else.

Global warming will suck! If it warms the oceans it will have a great effect on weather systems worldwide. Also it could cause a crash in zooplankton and phytoplankton which would wreak havoc on animal populations. Even if it doesn't warm the oceans (or raise them) warming would increase extinction, drought, disease and all sorts of other horrible things.

People live well in weather because it is predictable. If we changed weather patterns we would cause ourselves great problems.

The world will recover though. Earth has experienced great temperature changes and has still survived. It is just a matter of whether certain organisms can survive.

We need clean energy ASAP!!
