Is G1 worth switching to T-mobile for or is another android phone due out soon for AT&T?

My contract is up w/ AT&T and I'm not sure where to go right now. My phone now is working fine and is solid for my uses so I'm not in a huge rush. I'm just wondering how Android has matured and if the G1 is worth looking at over one of the newer Blackberries and the likes of those.

I like the idea of having basically a 'shell' of an OS and installing whatever you want/need to have a basically personalized phone, but I'm not sure if Android really works like that. So, how is the G1 working for folks these days? Is it worth switching to T-mobile for? Are there other possibly better Android based phones on the horizon I should wait for?

Always check to see coverage in your area before you think about switching to any carrier. Also check for 3G coverage as well.

Coverage isn't an issue, and neither is price for plan as both companies are relatively the same for what I need. I just need opinions on the G1 and how the Android OS is coming along. I heard it wasn't so great when it first came out but by now there has to be good apps to fill in what was missing. Like does it have anything to make it sync easier with outlook by now.

BUMP!

I wanna know about this as well.

I was over at Walmart trying to get a netbook (they were sold out) and wandered over to the phone area. They have G1's with T-mobile for dirt cheap and it would seem they sell unlocked G1's for about 350 bucks.

Should I get one and try to make it work with my Verizon service?
Should I go ahead and get one through T-mobile, assuming the above questions get answered?

G1 will never work with Verizon. T-mo is GSM and Verizon is CDMA.

Wow, what's dirt cheap? Last I checked they were $150 with contract.

Well if you want superb hardware with a great OS i would go with the blackberry bold, it is an amazing device it basically has everything but a touch screen. The G1 is about the opposite of the bold, it has an amazing OS (android) but it has only okay hardware. Go to the mall and try some phone out, however i have both and i would go with the blackberry bold any day, but i am trying the g1 right now and it is not a bad device at all.

HTC has said that they will be releasing 3 Android based phones this year. The Magic appears to be the first. T-Mobile is said to be having some sort of launch event on the 21st, so I expect we will know more then.

Samsung has also said that they will release 3 Android phones this year, and the first appears to be the S8000 Cubic.

Motorola has also said that they plan to release an Android phone this year, a $99 smartphone. Let's just say I'll believe it when I see it in my hands.

The G1 will be better with cupcake. Having to open it up to enter any text would get old in a hurry, and as mentioned, the hardware is a bit weak. The current iPhone has to many drawbacks for me to consider either. Personally I would just go into holding mode for a little bit if you can and see what the Magic and refreshed iPhone have to offer. If the iPhone 3.0 rumors turn out to be true it would seem to be the ticket as pretty much all the complaints I have with it(mms, copy/paste) will fixed.

Personally I am tired of waiting on andriod phones. I think I am going to just jump on a Pre when its released. (EVDO only here, no 3G GSM) Google has signed up all these companies but there is no hardware to be found. Sure it will come sooner or later but this is getting ridiculous.

I have both an iPhone and G1, like them both, obviously the iPhone OS is mare mature, but I have switched to the G1 and plan on selling my iPhone soon.

I'd suggest you stay month to month with ATT till the Magic is released, nicer form factor than the G1.

Pliable, what things on the G1 made it worth switching to over the iPhone?

android is pretty customizable...there are several "home screen replacements" that let you change the look and feel extensively.

app store is starting to come into its own, i believe there is an app now with exchange support.

i like having multiple input methods...touchscreen for general use, keyboard for text entry, trackball for fine control. it will be nicer with the on screen keyboard in cupcake though.

i've had it for about a month and i'm very happy with it. speeds on edge are acceptable to me for web browsing. push gmail is nice. locale is a cool program (alters phone settings based on your location)

it's only worth it if you're in the 3g network area and you don't mind paying less than iphone bill. Last time I checked I only pay $55 for 350mins, 400 txt, unlimited internet. btw if your looking for good apps android still isnt the one for you. most are crap in my opinion and google needs to manage it better.

last note all my iphone friends are usually impressed w/ my phone and they think its better in functionality. they especially are jealous that my battery life last longer than their meager 4.5hrs w/ 3g usage.

I've been wondering about this too. I'm leaning very strongly to getting a Bold over an iPhone or G1. On the other hand, I could just wait a few months.

But I am curious how you are getting such good battery life out of the G1? Everyone says it has the worst battery life of any smartphone device.

Honestly, I just got tired of being one of the many who owned an iPhone, got on an elevator recently-4 people, 3 of us dug out iPhones, I teased the person who didn't have one :)

No one has heard of a Google phone, everyone knows about Google, to it's got some geek cred :)

The apps are similar to those offered for the iPhone, just less of them, but as time goes on, the offerings will be more diverse & mature.

Also, as a TMobile customer, I don't have 3G capability on the hacked iPhones :(

As far as having a functional, useful, phone, there's a very good reason the iPhone is doing so well, were I an ATT customer, I'd be planning on getting a 3rd gen iPhone this summer...
