is Dexter supposed to be good, or get better?

I'm through 4 episodes of 1st season. It really seems like a CBS show more than a premium-network exclusive

-i cant sympathize with any of the characters
-i dont care to learn about dexter's past
-the tension between la puerta & dex's sister is very comical
-the black police guy character is really, really cheesy
-not really anxious to see dexter catch the ice killer

maybe ive been spoiled cuz i finished The Wire, but this show is wayyy too blah to captivate. is it just me, or will the show improve with latter episodes?

I watched the first couple of episodes and completely lost interest. I was told that it would get better, but it would have to get -alot- better to be worth watching.

I'll stick to LOST, Weeds, and old episodes of Arrested Development.

I loved the first 2 seasons of Dexter; great show! Have not seen the 3rd season yet.

The one (and only) OZ I watched involved man rape. I watched The View instead.

I don't know how much better it really gets, The payoff is certainly later on (last 2 episodes or so) when things really really come together. It's not one of those shows where you watch an episode and you go "wooooo" but it's like the wire where once you know the story/characters a bit things really start to come together. Although for me it didn't take that many episodes

But from what you've described...
- I sympathized with the characters (deb being in a seemingly dead end position, etc) pretty early on
- I found Dexter's past pretty compelling cause he didn't know anything about it and it seemed like it would explain why he was the way he was
- The tension between the two was amusing to me. It made deb's case for me a little more - stuck in a position she didn't want to be in and screwed by a higher up.
- The Black Police guy is really really cheesy... but that's also what I like about him. I wanted to watch him tear into Dexter (and well... 😛)
- I didn't want to see him catch the ice truck killer, but I was anxious to see what happens when they met (and boy oh boy..)

Maybe it's just not your kinda show?

You managed to get into the Wire but not Dexter? For me the Wire was a lot harder to get into - took a lot more watching. I'd say the wire is probably the better of the two, but Dexter is still very good.

weeds, really? It's a 25 minute show now and half of it is a terrible advertisement for the product of the week. not to mention they get through about 2 minutes of actual story per episode. The first and seconds seasons were pretty good, but started going downhill, then their timeslot got cut.

I watched through all current seasons of Dexter a couple of months ago. It keeps getting better, so stick with it.

Dexter is great and only gets better. Oh and don;t worry about the black guy. 😉

And also... in real life Deb and Dex are married.

The first episodes of the first season are meant to be ambiguous. Trust me, it's all leading up to something. They're just laying down the framework for the twists that will come later.

Most of your issues I share. After about 2/3 of the first season or so I started to not care as the main storyline became quite interesting.

Weeds needed to remain a one-hour show, I agree.

Every time someone mentions that show I think maybe it's some sort of awesome live action dexter's lab, and then I realize it's not and stop caring.

Fantastic show, gets better and downright addicting. I watched seasons 1-3 within a 2 week time period and I'm eagerly anticipating season 4!
