Is cow tipping a felony?

I was raised on a farm that had and has cattle on it. Believe me, it CAN be done, I have seen it done, and I have done it (however, I was assisting a veterinary).

However, I BEG of you and your friends, DO NOT do it! If they fall on their sides, they CANNOT get back up, and will die unless aided within a short time span. I actually have this big plastic belt that attaches to a tractor & loader that gets cattle back up... and depending on how hard they fell, they may have to stay in the belt (kind wraps around them like an old belt swing) because of bruising or whatnot.

There's NO way I would do it, besides being very cruel to the cow, it's VERY expensive for the farmer, no matter what happens... if they find the cow and manage to get it back up in time, then it MAY cost them at least their time, not to mention possible medications, treatments, fuel for equipment, etc. If they don't make it in time, they they would have expenses such as a very expensive cow (some are upwards of $1000), and costs to have them buried (which is more than one might expect).

PLEASE talk your "friends" out of cow tipping.

Actually, I know that isn't the case. 🙂 Maybe I should have used ( 😉 ) My family owns a ~120K sq. foot cattle ranch south of albuquerque in new mexico. FWIW my extended family say they've never seen it done.
 
Heh...I've lived out in the country my whole life and there are a few farms around here that have cows, but I just learned a few years ago that cows don't sleep standing up. I always thought they did...
 
One of my friends grew up in farm country and has milked many a cow. It definitely can be done, but it CAN break the cow's ribs and cause death.

If you could just tip the bastards over, have them moo a little then get back up and be perfectly fine then it'd be tons of fun... but cows are fux0r3d when you tip them and that's bad.

Yeah, and that's part of some family's livelihood. Definitely not cool to tip cows.

How do you figure that the cows can't get back up? They sleep on their sides, and get back up just fine. I've seen them tipped over and seen them get right back up. I'll agree that knocking a cow over could definitely injure it, but to say they can't get back up is crap. Ride by any cattle or dairy farm and you'll see plenty of cows laying on their sides, and they'll get up when they feel like it.

That, I have no first-hand knowledge of; I really never had reason to ask WHY they couldn't get up... However, I DO know that many farmers can tell if a cow is in trouble or is dead by the way it is laying. I don't know why they wouldn't be able to, maybe from all of the injuries they would probably sustain? I've just been told that, and I know that my uncle had to lift a couple of them back up after they were pushed over, and after they got up, they were ok. I will definitely look into it more, Pacfanweb... I would agree with you, I just know what I've been told in regards to that.

It's probably b/c they get uber injured w/ the cracked ribs and whatnot. It's not that they can't get back up on their sides, it's that they are fux0r3d beyond normal injury and can probably barely move. It's not as if you were pushed off your bed during your sleep, it would be more like if you were pushed out the 1st story window b/c their 1500 lbs falling over is probably that same impact...

OK, I've just talked to my father regarding this specific point. He grew up on our cattle ranch and still holds a share in it. He said that's utter hogwash. and though he said he's tipped a cow once or twice him himself, he's never heard of a cow not being able to get back up as you have described.

Ive had it happen, quite a few times. Usually I just grunt and go back to sleep.
 
At UC Davis, it could get you expelled and fined like 10k. Of course, this is with super expensive 10k a peice experimental cows.
