Is California Liberal?

I lived in central CA for 25 years. It was mostly farm country...and pretty conservative...

Oh, and San Diego is fairly conservative as is Orange County. I have voted for Republicans and I have voted for Democrats. I did not vote for Mitt the Mormon though nor did I vote for McCain and his dimwitted troll dog sidekick.

San Diego County has started going for the Democrats pretty consistently now, although the suburbs are still Republican central. I am so proud of them. For awhile all we had was Susan Davis.

3) A large percentage of voters are registered as Independents. A vast majority of these Independents have been voting Democratic. Why? Independents are typically socially liberal. Republicans are campaigning on their social conservatism, so they lose these votes. Independents have no problem voting for a Republican candidate that respects individual rights. Ronald Regan's stance on homosexuality is a perfect example of this.

6) The state's second largest "religious" group, and the fastest growing, are atheists. An atheist obviously isn't going to vote for a party that runs on "Christian values", even if many atheists hold libertarian values.

I am an atheist in California, and I agree on both parts here. I, and I believe most others, would absolutely detest a Republican in office who implemented strongly conservative social policies. So much so that I usually (but not always) vote Democrat even though I don't like some of the policies they put forth.

I live in SD and my in-laws are very conservative. The last election was the first they ever voted for a Democrat. I voted for McCain but there was no way in hell I was voting for Mitt the Mormon. In fact, a lot of very conservative people that go to my wife's church did not vote for Mitt the Mormon in the last election. I have started to notice recently that people who were pretty hardcore left or right in the past are starting to sway more towards the middle. Of course this doesn't seem to be helping the GOP as people who used to be far right now tend to vote left since the right is just crazy.

To me both parties suck but I will vote for the least craziest which happens to be the Dems right now. Hopefully the GOP can get their shit together in time for the elections and have a viable candidate to go against Hillary but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

She is the reason I didn't vote for McCain. I could not imagine having someone that stupid being a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

I didn't even bother to vote in the last Presidential election. Obama took California by a sweeping 60% of the vote so ultimately it wouldn't have mattered at all if I had voted or who I voted for. It wouldn't have been Mitt the Mormon though I can tell you that for certain.

In 2008, even though I've been a registered Democrat for more than 40 years, I did NOT vote for O'Bummer. I don't think there's ever been an honest Chicago politician...and even though O'Bummer is a good speaker, I just didn't have any trust in the guy. BUT, even though at one time I actually LIKED McCain, (until he let Bush steamroll him in 2004) I could not vote for him either...so, for the first time in my life, I did not vote for the Democratic candidate. I opted to "throw away" my vote by voting for one of the third party candidates on the ballot.

However, as much as I dislike O'Bummer, I voted for him in 2012 because I was wanted to do my part to help keep Mitt the Mormon out of the office.
Yes, it made me feel...unclean...but I can live with that. Like I said...I've been a registered Democrat for more than 40 years...I'm used to voting for a candidate I don't like rather than voting Republican.

I think the collapse of the CA Republican party basically turned San Diego County into a toss up. The county was overall conservative with the city being a tad liberal. The last few election the Democrats in SD have been putting up good moderate candidates. The exception being Alvarez beating off Fletcher for the run off election. Had Fletcher won, I think he could have beat Faulconer. A moderate Democrat even won in my district in 2012 although that creep DeMaio is running against him this year.
