<< Bud,there is no new technology that makes nuclear safe from terrorism, nor removal of spent bi-products. The possibility of meltdowns increases as you put more nuclear power plants on line, and a Chernobl desaster is just a matter of time. >>

Um Not really Nothing is safe from terrorism. THe russian ran their reactors at a much higher level than the USA. Look at the nuclear naval system. They Have NEVER lost a ship to Nuclear failure or meltdown.

Is the water supply "safe" from terrorism?

Do not allow "terrorists" to define us or decide what we will do.

Nuclear makes sense, cut the red tape and DO IT!!!

Red."And we are now 50th in consumption . "

Interesting, is that per capita or what?
consumption estimates by source and by sector
eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/california/statistics.

Red, whatever gave you the wrong impression that I dislike California? I enjoyed my time spent there and believe it is a very beautiful state.

I have stated many times what I do dislike was some of the Californians on this board trying to twist California's energy woes onto Pres. Bush and the current administration. Once again, please read the title of this thread.

I think Kalifornica should break away from the US, float out into the eastern Pacific, and then enter into a mutal defense agreement with the Chi'comms: two States that can't support themselves without help from those they contemptuously despise.

Oh, the irony. :D

OI for one am not blaming Bush for the problems caused by our misguided and ill advised plan of deregulation. I place the blame squarely on the shoulders of Pete Wilson and the Republicans and Demoncrats in the California Legislature back when Pee Wee Pete was the Governor. When a state can't provide enough energy for it's needf on it's own deregualtion does not work. Deregualtion only works when a State can provide a surplus amount of energy on its own. At the time we had a 20% deficit in energy production.

Deregulation also fails to work when it isn't instituted properly. Deregulating half of the industry and then preventing companies from establishing energy contracts. Instead, they were forced to buy on the spot and pay very high premiums for the short notice.

The fault lies with California citizens.. california is a represented democracy made up of elected officials.. elected by the california citizens. You elected wilson, your solution to wilson was a counter-balancing socialist while it should have been a maverick moderate willing to make the proper changes to poorly instituted policies. But no, you elected Davis, he appointed his selections to the PUC and now you have what you have. CA was supposed to have a few plants online at the beginning of this summer but for whatever reason that has been delayed.

Man....a guy goes to the U.S. Open for a couple of days and misses out on a lot.

I see that Red is still unleashing his California is so great and the rest of the U.S. sucks propoganda.

Triple...it's true that Ok imports a lot of it's coal from outside sources but that's mainly because the mines in the SE part of the state produce coal with WAY too much sulfur content. That is changing though since a majority of the plants here have installed some sort of new scrubber that allows them to burn high sulfur coal and release less pollutants than they were burning the imported stuff. I have an uncle who works for PSO(Public Service Company of Oklahoma) and he was telling me at the last familiy function that the plants are starting to burn more and more native OK coal.

As for natural gas output...I have no ideas what the numbers are but I think Ok produces a hella lot of natural gas. Heck...my parent's land has 17 wells on it alone. That's just natural gas wells...doesn't include our oil wells.

It's been one hell of a thread. What started out as a debate on California/Washington D.C. energy policy has flourished into a multi-faceted political, name calling heated topic.

I do know this: Many of Ca.'s large businesses are re-locating to other states, high taxes, regulatory environment, and energy problems cited as main reasons.

I like threads such as this because I'm exposed to opinions and beliefs from all possible sides of an issue.

Sure, Ca. will eventually overcome their energy problems...in time.It may very well be a painful process.

I wanna add my opinions on the "Star Wars Continental Shield".Even if the damn thing doesn't work well, it will definitely provide jobs for folks in California. They always seem to have an abundance of high-tech,aerospace engineers and facilities.

Another benefit from the defense system is that, whenever huge amounts of monies are spent on defense research, peaceful products are discovered/invented.

I read that Oklahoma has an oil well right in front of their legislative building. If they have wells capped, it is because they are saving that (conserving) for the day when other places have run out.Not a particularly dumb plan.

I also read that the U.S.A. has something like 2/3 of the world's known coal reserves.Granted, the majority of it is "Dirty Coal",high in sulphur, and/ or other polluting by-products.

So to the guy who said that a way has been found to burn this high sulphur coal, and do so with reduced emmissions, that's great!

As for diversity of energy supplies,I think the U.S. should derive energy from all possible sources. That includes Solar(which hasn't been economically rewarding, wind,Ocean currents, Oil, Natural Gas, Coal, Nuclear, whatever.

I think there's a good chance that the U.S. energy companies and/or government will build Nuclear plants in Mexico.Less regulation, and political infighting.

As far as Russia goes, sure, they have a long way to go in order to establish credibility with the rest of the world.I feel that the U.S., and the rest of the developed nations should help them out, a bit at a time.

We surely don't want to go back to an adversarial relationship with the former states of the U.S.S.R...Let's help 'em out a bit.

On the other hand, China is the rest of the world's worry. They possess huge numbers of people that they consider expendable. They have vast pools of slave labor.I believe China to be the single most threatening nation in the world. They must be kept in check.

<< The fact that a single nuclear accident or terrorist attack can create a billion year hazard ought to eliminate it from contention among sane people. >>

Hey Moonbeam, thanks for confirming my long-running assessment that the French, in addition to being rude, obnoxious, and haughty, are indeed not sane people (France derives 75% of its electricity from nuclear sources, chart ).

Ditto for most of the rest of Europeans... seems socialists are insane people after all.... i'll let Czar know what you think of Europeans, i'm sure he'll love you for it ;)

guitronics, one correction.

The oil wells that were capped in Oklahoma and many other states were mostly capped when oil prices were very low. They were stripper wells that produce only a few barrels of oil a day. The maintenance and electricity costs to run them cost more then what they were making their owners especially after taxes. The downside is that once they are capped they will not be reopened. The holes are filled with concrete(environmental and safety regulations) and it would not be profitable to redrill them until oil gets very very high.

It was a failure of the administration at the time that they did not give producers a sliding break on taxes because that oil has effectively been lost forever. Those few barrels of oil from many wells added up to a lot of oil.

Red, I see what you mean about the exports from California.

Glenn1, Czar is a geothermal kind of guy, I'll bet. Whatever conclusions you want to draw about the Europeans, feel free to do so. I'm not so much interested, though, in choices made in the past. It's what we now know that makes nuclear look insane to me. I personally will cast my lot with those that oppose it, so as not to be among those of humanity that might just wind up cursed for a hundred thousand years. All the answers we've been brainwashed into supporting always wind up with a meter and a bill. Ever hear the stories of people who have tried to sell their home generated solar or wind produced electricity back to the power companies. Roadblock after roadblock after roadblock.

Moonbeam, what are your objections to nuclear power? I ran across this site and it seems to refute some of your previous objections.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NUCLEAR ENERGY

example
Q. What about nuclear waste?

A. The waste consists of the fission products. They are highly radioactive at first, but the most radioactive isotopes decay the fastest. (That's what being most radioactive amounts to). About one cubic meter of waste per year is generated by a power plant. It needs to be kept away from people. After 10 years, the fission products are 1,000 times less radioactive, and after 500 years, the fission products will be less radioactive than the uranium ore they are originally derived from.

How comforting.:frown:

My brother worked on nuclear reactors and maintained the reactor in a nuclear sub.He informs me the half life of spent uranium is 10,000 years. You just love spinning this crap, don't you etech?

Lets send the spent waste to your Oklahoma back yard.

Substances with a very short half-life are very radioactive, but only for a short time. A longer half-life means that the activity is weaker, but it lasts a lot longer. In 10 half-lives the activity will drop to less than one thousandth of its initial value

Well well well.
Looks like Bushie Boy caved in on price caps. Although he claims it's not price-caps.
Apparently the CA congressional republicans were feeling the heat. I pity the foo who ignores CA.
Looks like Davis is getting some heat too from hypocritical republican ads. This would be Republican's big chance, except for one thing. Pete Wilson and prop. 187. As easy as it is to blame Davis, it's even easier to blame Wilson for anything here in CA.
