Is Bush's goal to suck California dry?

Bush forces CA to buy ethanol.
It's not enough that Texas is hosing us with electricity prices, now we have to subsidize Midwest ethanol production with our hard earned money.

<< California motorists could see price spikes of as much as 50 cents per gallon, >>

Hello, we are already paying $2.30 for gas here. Why should 30 million Californians have to support 10,000 corn farmers?
So all of you "well-wishers" who think that we are all environment freaks here, wake up. The feds are forcing us to do this. In fact it was shown that ethanol is worse for our environment then plain gasoline.
It's like we are a big welfare office for midwest farmers.
The Bush administration has yet to take the side of the consumers in any dispute. It appears to be for sale to the highest bidder.

<< Gas prices could jump as much as 50 cents a gallon and air pollution will worsen, state officials warned Tuesday, thanks to an Environmental Protection Agency decision preventing California's exemption from federal gas rules. >>

<< To comply with the federal Clean Air Act, >>

Read that again my friend....how exactly is Bush responsible for an EPA ruling? If you will do a bit of research you will see that the Clean Air Act was passed in 1970.

Typical liberal smear tactics....thanks for playing....try again.

I'll admit it, that is the first decision by the Bush administration that I disagree with.

I've never been a fan of ethanol in gasoline though. It takes more enery to produce it and it not that effective at reducing harmfull emissions.

Hopefully this ruling will be changed.
"The EPA defended its decision in a press release. It says the federal Clean Air Act legally constrains the agency. The law requires gas sold in the smoggiest areas to have an added oxygenate to make it burn more cleanly. More than two-thirds of the gas sold in the state must have an additive."

"The matter is not entirely settled. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has sponsored legislation that would allow a state to get an exemption from the federal gas rule if the state can show that it could meet clean air standards without using gasoline additives. "

Because it's outlived it's purpose.
The act is pointless. It requires additives to gasoline that were shown to not only not improve pollution, but make it worse. We have been adding MTBE, which is polluting our ground water just to satisfy the clean air act.
The only purpose for that requirement now is to force CA to subsidize farmers in Iowa.

Has the clean air act served it's purpose? Who know....that wasn't my point. The point is that you are blaming Bush for this. He had nothing to do with it nor can he simply overturn a law that Congress passed 31 years ago.

I'm sure if G.W. did try to get this repealed then all the enviromentalist would jump his case in 1/2 a second.

EPA should waive this stupid requirement. I am sure Bush could make it happen if he wanted to. And this argument that Bush didn't do anything is stupid. He purposedly ignores CA problems, especially if the status quo helps his political donors.
If he doesn't want to do anything to help the consumers, and just sides with businesses every time, what's the point of having him in the white house.

The Clean Air Act is part of the U.S. Code and can't just be tossed aside simply because you may not like it. Of course you probably wouldn't mind tossing aside the 2nd Amendment either.

Ok, idiot.
I don't give a damn about 2nd ammendment. I don't know why you bring it in. I don't mind people owning guns.
But how would you feel if someone forced you to buy something that you don't need, and something that is actually bad for you? This is ridiculous.
I guess you are against abortion too...

If you remember california was forced to add MTBE to gas by the federal government to comply with the clean air act or have our highway funds cut off.Extortion in my book. The cost was thrown at the oil refineries who passed it to the consumer.
*cough* Clinton administration *cough* OOps we didn't know it would leach into the groundwater.

I say screw the highway funds. The roads here suck anyways, and a lot of people have SUV's now. Let them go off-road. :)

If you don't like it then call your Congressman/Congresswoman and Senators. My whole point in replying to you was that you were bashing Bushover something he had nothing to do with. If you are going to spout off at least get your facts straight.

And yes...I am against abortion except for in certain circumstance. That is a whole different thread though.

MTBE and ethanol are two different things. As a Pinko commie, I don't mind at all being forced to help out midwestern farmers. I like small farms. I got a hunch though we are probably just helping Archer Daniels Midlands, but it is a renewable resource. It's a complex issue. It might be better to require a conversion of farm equipment to burn alcohol so as to keep the resource efficient by keeping it local. Maybe not tax a barter exchange of corn for alchohol.

EPA should give us some breathing room here. I am sure they have some discretion that they are not using. Bush is turning a blind eye.
I don't see him asking Congress to pass this waiver. He is not showing initiative here. And since the House Republicans are blindly following him, nothing will get done. The point is, he doesn't care about CA.
I am sure even if congress waives these rules, he will veto it, because of the money ethanol lobby has given him. And the bastard will claim that he is doing it for the environment and for CA.
This is the most anti-CA president I have ever seen. He is finishing the job Pete Wilson started.

SuperTool, don't blow a gasket yet. This thing is just starting. They already found documents that the energy companies were trying to keep power plants from being built to jack up prices. The senate will be looking in to what's going on and Cali may get it's exception status.

Let's see...Bush is anti California because

1. He won't put price caps on energy like Gray Davis is begging him to do. Of course price caps can be proven not to be effective and even Davis himself has said so in the past.

2. Bush won't interfere with a 31 year old law and give Cali a special waiver.

Seems to me that Cali is just asking for special preferences and Bush is saying no and following the law and common sense.

I don't believe that GW Bush is strictly for business, nor do I believe that he is strictly for consumers.

Business is made up of people.People support Business. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

He's gotta weigh all of the evidence, scientific and political, then make his decision.

I think he's going along with the clean air act(it IS the law), yet the die-hard Democrats still find ways to criticize him.

Give the guy a break.Maybe some of the overcrowded citezenry of Southern California should move to less crowded regions.

Or maybe they could elect some representatives who will have the whole states' interests in mind. They have been blaming 'outside political/business forces'long enough. When will the people of California wake up?

Quite a few companies headquartered in SoCal are doing just that...especially silicon valley firms.

California has in the last 25 years or so,became a cesspool of environmental, political, cultural, and economic stagnation.

The Democrats really got their money's worth, what with their leftist/democrat brainwashing. Now the whole state is reaping what they sowed.

I had family that lived there since 1967. 5 Years ago, they all moved to Washington State/Oregon.Too much crime, taxation, regulation, population in Calif.

It is too bad for California's people, but they will have to make the slow climb up and out of the quagmire they've found themselves in.

Kinda reminds me of NYC when they went broke several years back.

Surely 30 million Californians can support 10000 Midwestern corn farmers. This is the essence of liberal/leftist ideology! Pay up for Democrats.

You hit it right on the money. This has nothing to do with politics or issues, it's about payback.

I think the people of CA shot themselves right in the foot. Bush knows that there is no chance in hell he'll ever win the vote from CA in the next election. Might as well stick a big dildo up CA's rear and make the rest of the nation happy. I live in CA, but heck, I think the idiots here deserve the price hike because they're dumb enough to vote of Gore.

Keep cheering for your pathetic Lakers LA. Maybe Shaq and Kobe will help pay the bill with the millions they're making from you.
