Is BTX aimed to end big desktop cases?

It looks like BTX motherboards are only offered as microBTX.

Is BTX aimed to make most of desktop PC's smaller?

Size is also a factor. They have BTX cases that will fit a full sized video card and the cases are the sizes of the slim matx ones. Pretty impressive.

BTX also has a little something to do with chip placement to speed up communication between the bridges and CPU.

I think BTX will catch on. I remember reading the article at Anandtech about Computex, and there were quite a few BTX motherboards on display. I think in a few more years, it'll probably make it's place into the market.

I think BTX is a marketing gimmic......mostly smoke and mirrors with very little/no improvement over ATX. If it really was a big step forward, it would be in place right now. :frown:

yeah btx is awkward and probably will not catch on...plus, there's always gonna be people who want big desktops. People like space when they're working inside...i know i do

ah hi... lian li v1200 or v2000? p180? basicaly they're BTX style cases (not full but almost). not caught on? those are some of the more 'wanted' cases around. lian li is a really good brand for cases too... not a dell or gateway or whatever.

btx isn't much of an improvement but its definately being adopted.. and its still an improvement over atx.

Shuttle released one XPC in BTX form factor, claiming it to be great cooling and almost silent.

... EVERY review has said the exact opposite - the design was a flop. Hotter and louder.

Maybe it was just Shuttle that screwed it up - they've been doing a LOT of that lately.

[sarcasm]Yeah, just like fuel cells. :/ WTF. Stupid marketing gimmics. [/sarcasm]

Actually BTX is sort-of like "New Coke".....maybe the Ford Edsel. Both came on strong with much hope for success, promising improvement.....both faded after a short time. BTX, What BTX? 😛

BTX is about cooling, not case size. Whether OEMs use it or not won't determine it's success/failure, they did also use riser cards afterall and to this day I haven't seen a Retail mobo mimmick that.

Here's my suggestion, or theory, about BTX: it was going to get harder to cool a Prescott running at 4 GHz-plus than any air-cooled case designs could handle. While one Intel department was trying to keep the temps from rising too much, another created the BTX to control the temps in spite of Prescott overheating. But it turned out to be a dead end cpu design (Prescott).

In effect, this made the BTX an orphan. It's still potentially more efficient at air-cooling, but newer cpu developments at Intel are in cooler-running directions. AMD might've needed the better cooling when their T-Birds were so comparatively hot-running, but the AMD 64's don't run nearly so warmly.

😀

i think it'll come around eventually. people were saying the same stuff abotu AT cases too. it took a good 5 years to really kill off AT cases.

A big part of it is that case manufacturers would have to retool to create BTX cases. That would bite into profits, and the case manufacturers wouldn't want that. With no cases, mobo manucfacturers don't see a point.

It's a bit like PCI-E . Real performance benefit. But no adoption.

Antec currently has a hot slim BTX case with a slot for a full sized video card. Too bad there are no AMD btx mobos yet. I'm currently waiting to see if the MSI btx mobo for AMD will be priced fairly. If it is, i'll jump on, if its not, I'll just buy another matx mobo I have been keeping my eye on.

i figure this is the same stuff people were talking about with AT cases.

they had to retool. AT cases were still around for about 3 years during the transition period. I mean BTX just came out around last october, or at least thats when NDAs were lifted.

atx came out around when i was a freshman in high school, but it wasnt wide spread till about when i got to college from what i remember. all use el cheapo lan partiers still stuck with our cheap AT cases.

my BTX case just arrived. It seems pretty nice. I got the new chenbro one. I didnt even know antec made a btx case.

from what i read AMDs socket M2 is already supposed to raise the processor TDP up to 115 watts. that is only a bit lowre than the hottest prescotts at 135 watts. so AMD will eventually have to move over too.

The Problem with BTX cases is they are meant and designed to help cool CPUs (this is a good thing) but actually cause Video cards to run hotter. If you want to go Highend SLI then BTX isn't suggested.
