well yeah, the 335 is a better car than the merc.... and it'll be a faster machine than the 530 wich is more a managerial waft-mobile

the 335 engine really is a master piece... Bi-turbo'd 3.0litre 6..... mmmmmm 306HP. of course the new M3 will be even better, it'll have a V8 though and im not sure i like that, it jus wont sound like a M3 (CSL versions straight 6 is phenominal!)

I dont follow BMW much, have they nailed down a V8 for the next M3? I knew there was some talk about whether it would be a 6 or 8.
I'd like to see them go with either a worked over 6 to keep with the history or a flat plane 8. Either one would be cool.

I think it's overpriced. But if you want a twin turbo BMW, then you'll just have to suck it up and pay the big bucks.

Meh, it'll probably still sell like hotcakes.

Is you out of your mind, or just retarded?

You're comparing an optioned out vehicle that you priced out with your specific options to what the other vehicles start out at?

Obviously when you add on options it will increase the price dramatically.

I just optioned out a 5 series and it costs $63k. Do the same to the Audi, Lexus, or Mercedes and you'll get prices that are similar..unless you want a bare-bones luxury car.

I'm guessing this is your first new car purchase?

I would have to say Mercedes > BMW

but that's me.

It's like saying Toyota > Honda

Not really much of a difference, but I think Mercedes has more appeal and their AMG line-up is amazing.

Your crazy. The AMG lineup is a bit underpowered, a bit too porky and not as stylish.
BMW all the way.

SL65 AMG 😀🙂

What does BMW have to go up against that?

Audi S4. Next.

This is absurd. AMGs are a lot of things, but underpowered isn't one of them. If anything many of them generate more power than their chassis can productively use. I'd also take issue with "not as stylish." A few years ago I would have agreed, but BMW has taken a huge nose dive in styling - there is no current BMW that compares to, say, the Merc CLS when it comes to style IMHO.

FWIW, I agree that BMW still offers a more cohesive driving experience, notwithstanding the fugly factor of the Bangle cars.

well, it's commonly known that BMW gets people on options, but atleast for me base it came with anything i really care about, power windows, decent stereo and AC.

I'm not the target market though and not a very demanding consumer featurewise anyways.

but yeah after a few options here and there, and then tax, it gets to around 50K.

have you heard the V8 on the S4 and RS4? trust me, moving to the V8 is a good thing 😉

I dunno.. I've heard the M3 CSL before, and it was probably best sound I've ever heard this side of exotics. I've yet to see or hear the RS4's though so i guess I'll reserve judgement. Most V8's ive heard are just too deep and rumbly for my tastes. Im just the kind that loves the growl and whine from a high reving engine.

I may be wrong, but shouldn't it be either 'Is BMW out of its mind?' Or 'Are BMW out of their mind?'

Just sounded odd. EIther way, yes, a 335 v a 530 seems a bit silly. Although I presume if you specced all of those other cars up to the rafters aswell, then your price differential would settle down again.

i wasn't sure so i went with whatever sounded most wrong.

So most of ATOT could understand.

It should be "Is BMW out of its mind."

Although if you're in the UK, companies are referred to in the plural form.

Model ranges for these vehicles have always overlapped a bit, especially when options are considered.

and, so? i don't understand why the shock. it's priced on par with all other vehicles in its class and it's a better performer. you're also missing the badge factor. it goes like this for luxury sedans:

1. mercedes
2. bmw
3. audi

as far as legacy, panache and prestige lexus and infinity are not even in the same league

i'm trying to figure out where audi's badge factor comes from. that badge's history is fully of engines catching on fire, cars that fall apart, stuff not working, etc. there was a reason you never saw audis on the streets, and it had nothing to do with exclusivity. i guess that is a legacy, though not one i'd want.

Ever heard of Horch? That's where most of Audi badge factor comes from. The choice ride of upper eschelon Wehrmacht officers. Do some research.

Considering that it's a twin-turbo, 300hp/torque car or so, no, I don't think they're out of their mind. It's not that far off the E46 M3, and it's almost $10k less MSRP. I think there will be plenty of buyers in that space.

Those looking for the 3-series aren't considering a 5-series. The 530i is ungodly slow compared to the 335i. To even draw up the comparison suggests you're missing the point entirely. None of the cars you've mentioned come close in terms of performance.

There are plenty of cars you can get that have 300hp or more with almost the same ride for $30k or so.

Hence my argument for flat planes.
