Actually, atheism is the vast minority of religious beliefs. All around the world almost everyone believes in some sort of supernatural God. I think it takes an interesting sort of mind to believe that almost everyone else is wrong about this basic point, and you are right. And its certainly not a rational mind.

It is impossible to say it is irrational to believe in God, because that thought would only come from irrational thinking. It cancels itself out. The belief in a higher power is as old as mankind, billions believe it today. It would be totally irrational to completely ignore the power of such belief and say it is ignorant when you have zero real reason to believe that. I would say it takes more faith to not believe in God than to believe in God, so in the end it is more rational to believe in God than the opposite.

My take on this: It's not irrational. Faith provides emotional support for many and is a moral base. I doubt the US would be as advanced as it is now without some of the moral base.

Jesus taught to be humble, so theoretically Christians are supposed to be humble. The few jackholes give the smug image you claim. I have never met a smug Christian in person, but I can see why you'd think the few you see on TV are.

However, I've noticed more recently that being Atheist is "cool" and people who don't believe in God think they're better (and "smarter") than those who believe in God.
