None of the above. I do still get people referring to me as "he"/"him" etc, from time to time though. Not sure how much more explicit I need to be that I'm not a guy :p.

Ditto. I just ignore it now as a lot of the kids have never seen how it is in the real world. There are LOTS of women in tech and professional fields. :)

You are moderators. People usually don't ask a moderator, who can ban you, for pics. Or, say things like, "tits or gtfo." You would just ban that guy.

Not true! When we participate in a thread it's common ground just like anyone else. The title may be there but "everything else" is left at the door. :)

Note I'm referring primarily to highly qualified positions, not technical support, etc. This is no reflection on women of course, but rather just the stereotypes that a lot of women seem to want to avoid.
That would be fine with me. :)

Unless they're all still in Asia.

Very well then.

*ahem*
:

Tits or.....well, no need to GTFO. Please and thank you.

There, see? Not hostile. I was perfectly civil and polite. I said "please," gave a pre-emptive "thank you," and did not insist on the GTFO clause.

:D

Yes and no.

The net as a whole is a pretty dog eat dog place and I thing you just have to accept it for what it is most of the time. I have seen people torn apart in threads here and felt sorry for them but all and all there are much worse forums on the net!! ATOT has managed to hold a nice fine balance between the brutality and utter cluster f*ck that is some forums and the iron fisted closed forums on the other side of the fence. Occasionally things veer one way or another but all in all I like the balance. It makes for a fun snappy environment.

Another thing is people will say things on the net to each other that they wouldn't dare say to someone in person. But all you have to do is hang out with the right crowd and you will hear some pretty brutal stuff in "real life". I've had acquittance and coworkers say things about female customers and others they see that make "I'd hit it" sound like sweet nothings.

None of the above. I do still get people referring to me as "he"/"him" etc, from time to time though. Not sure how much more explicit I need to be that I'm not a guy :p.

You've only been here for three years and haven't spent any significant time posting in OT.

I honestly didn't even know your username until you were announced as a moderator. The OT forum is a different beast than the hardware ones.

I do spend most of my time in the Hardware/Tech subforums (and PC Gaming somewhat), so there's that. And I think a substantial percentage of what I do post in ATOT is something related to either NewEgg/UPS/USPS rants or other non-social topics that don't normally lead to requests for pics. Certain threads are just fodder for asshat behavior, whether that's behavior of the sexist kind or something else ;).

not really.

I mean, when you put yourself out there in a certain way you get treated in a certain way. It doesn't just happen with female members, it happens with male ones too.

Lord knows I brought enough on myself at the time.

eta:
there are sexist people here and that comes out but there are also racist and homophobic people too.. just because a few people are like that does not set the tone for the whole board.

.The interesting thing about the incessant cry of :camera:'s? is even if one is provided, who is to say thats actually the person requestd? I mean, if it's like;y the 15 yo girl in the chat room is actually a 29 year old unemployed guy in his skivveys in his mom's basement, wouldn't the same possibility exist for the person whose picture has been demanded?
I think it would be cool for some gal whose getting pestered to go grab a picture from CL's hook up section and decoy them.
What possible good can be served by actually letting your picture get out?, ESPECIALLY like that.

I do my best to be unhelpful and hostile. It's gotten me banned a few times though. I guess I just need to refine my technique.
