if you go to live in germany - you are expected to learn german

the list goes on and on with each country.. so why should the usa be any different? want to live here? learn our language and assimilate our culture. there was a thread about this a while ago and mosh had some awesome quote from teddy roosevelt about immigration

whatever - its perfectly fine. The ATM at WAMU here asks me for english, spanish, chinese or korean...its to easier serve customers. If you can ONLY speak english (and pity you for being bound to one language) then pick ENGLISH and IGNORE the other options.

For those who have a problme - get that stick out of you a$$ because it makes you look silly that you care so much.

i swear - we export our language world wide and make it the primary language of business and biatch when people who come here try to use another language that they are more versatile in. Their english SUCKS - and by using their own native language here it makes the transition SIMPLER for them.

I seriously doubt someone with his attitude has spent significant time in another country.

Anyone who bitches about spending a few seconds out of their day to select their language has obviously never tried to master a foreign language as an adult or tried to make their way in a foreign land without the help of his native language.

This is a ridiculous argument anyway, because businesses will continue to do what makes them the most money. Places like banks have a lot more to lose by turning down the business of people who are more comfortable speaking Spanish than they have to lose by making intolerant people like the OP press "1".

I agree that people moving to a new country should learn that country's language. I also realize that people moving from some countries, especially poorer or war torn countries do not have the option of taking English classes before they immigrate and have to wait until they arrive to do so.

I haven't been to the US in years and maybe the Spanish speaking people have no intention of learning English, but if they (or others) are making an attempt, why not assist them along the way at the minor expense of all the English speaking people having to push one extra button?

er, you have a twisted idea of how things work in other countries. perhaps they humor tourists who don't know their language sure. but do you really think the germans or french like people who go there to live and don't learn their language? esp the french..you know how they cherish and protect their language, actually the government is involved last i checked. their citizenship tests are much harder than ours too. like any normal people they take people not learning their language as a sign of disrespect.

i believe you're misinterpreting my previous statement. let me put it in blander terms for you. with America as diverse as it is, it would be in the companies' best interest to cater, not only to consumers like yourself, but to everyone else as well.

granted it would be to your convenience if English was defaulted, but don't be absent-minded to the general public.

f.y.i: most banks have options for other languages other than Spanish.
