Yes I may get flamed for this, yes I might need to be more tolerant but dammit this is America and I'm proud to speak English.

Well, I feel for the English as second+ language people. Would you be comfortable dealing with your money matters in your non-native language?

If the banks felt that they could make enough money using ATM machines that are loaded with an English-only interface, they would, i.e., it all comes down to the almighty buck.

cry me a river OP. the multi-lingual Americans are the very foundations of this country, i believe they should at least have the option of using their primary language.
please tell me, which of our founding fathers was bi-lingual? i think you are confusing religious freedom and language
i believe you're misinterpreting my previous statement. let me put it in blander terms for you. with America as diverse as it is, it would be in the companies' best interest to cater, not only to consumers like yourself, but to everyone else as well.

granted it would be to your convenience if English was defaulted, but don't be absent-minded to the general public.

f.y.i: most banks have options for other languages other than Spanish.
In otherwords, TheSiege, if you organized and boycotted the banks that used multi-lingual ATMs, you could cause banks to change back to English-only ATMs to get their fleeing customers back.

God forbid you should travel to another country in which language you weren't fluent, and need to have an English option!

Honestly, how small minded. It's not all about you, it's not all about the United States.

You know, OP, you're probably the same person that b!tches when you're over in another country and no one will serve you in English.

er, you have a twisted idea of how things work in other countries. perhaps they humor tourists who don't know their language sure. but do you really think the germans or french like people who go there to live and don't learn their language? esp the french..you know how they cherish and protect their language, actually the government is involved last i checked. their citizenship tests are much harder than ours too. like any normal people they take people not learning their language as a sign of disrespect.

Well, if you love the French so much. Move the f**k away from America. I enjoy my freedom of speaking any language I f**king want.

Go to France, I'm sure you like their system of government.

I'm not quite sure what position you're taking here. From my point of view, you seem to be a neffer. As you so quickly pride yourself in being American, and that you have a freedom to speak any language you want, I'll assume you're advocating that people should be able to speak whichever language they choose. But, rather than explicitly stating that, you decided to attack the previous poster and insult France. Good one.

Moving onto my position, I do believe that people are very capable of learning the English language. That does not mean that they should give up their old language, no; in fact, they should cherish it. But, it does mean that if they're going to live in America, they should learn the English language and use it whenever applicable. However, for the convenience of those just moving here, or those who have yet to master the English language, they should have the opportunity to have their native language as an option.

Basically, to put it simply: if you come to America, I certainly hope you learn English. You should definitely at least try. But, if you have difficulties or are new here, they should provide things in other languages.

Doesn't really bother me... It's an extra 2 seconds maybe. Plus most of the rest of the world has english as an option which rocks.

I'm offended by phone trees, period. I didn't notice huge price drops when businesses starting using these things.

When I was living in Europe there were a number of banks coming out with non-native language services, it was an untapped market for them since a lot of the immigrants, even though they could speak the language, were uneasy about investing their retirement funds and such.

I can barely understand the legalise when it is in English, lol.

In China, all the roads and most of the street have English sign. All the forms I had to sign were also printed in English.

I wonder if the chinese people say the same thing like the American do here "god damn it, why is there this english crap on the form and why do I have to read an English sign on the road."

When travelling in non-english speaking countries I appreciate the English option when taking money out of the bank.

I'm sure the same goes for non-english speaking people and ESL people travelling or living in English speaking countries who have other language options.

Why are you offended by a system that routes your call to exactly the person who handles your problem? Would you rather explain your problem to one human being, then hope they route your call appropriately, then have to explain your problem again?

Touristy area? You'll find that most people speak passable English in just about any touristy area in the world, because Americans travel a lot and expect to be able to travel anywhere without knowing the slightest bit of the native language. I visited Spain, and even though I knew enough Spanish to get by I don't think I spoke Spanish once. Everyone spoke English.

im not talking just about tourist type places, i call tmobile and get some god damned sentence in Spanish and have to wait 10 seconds for it continue, if you are going to sign a contract with tmobile and be here longer then a few weeks, learn the god damned language. if i go to some foreign country ill take a damn translating dictionary, if i plan on living there, setting up a bank account, buying groceries, and getting a cell phone contract. then i'll sit down with a book from the local library and learn the language in which i am engulfed in every damn day.

Because they usually don't route your call to the right person or any person. Usually they try to pass you off to some frickin recorded info that has nothing to do with your problem. If I wanted canned info, I would go to their website, that's what it's for.
