Is anyone else just not into sports?

Life would be boring without sports, although I hate the culture in some leagues. I almost feel guilty watching NFL and NBA. But MLB, NHL, both college sports (although that nasty culture is getting there too) are great.

I haven't actually played any organized sports in awhile, but I wanna find an indoor soccer league this winter.

I suppose I wouldn't be into any sport if I hadn't played football in HS. Football is a LOT of fun to play though, and once you have a handle on what's happening it's almost as much fun to watch.

In so many things in life we like to take sides and invest a little bit of ourselves so that we can gain a bit of entertainment from the success of our chosen "team". It's not just sports. It's nearly everything in which 2 or more competing factions can be identified. We always sneer at ATI/NVIDIA/AMD/Intel/Microsoft/Apple fanboys, and with good reason, but that doesn't stop people from trying to stake a claim so that they can feel elation when an entity that knows nothing and cares nothing about them has success. It's just something that's in us. We can't entirely avoid it, although we can try to temper ourselves by recognizing it.

The great thing about sports is that we can stake that claim unabashedly, because the entire point is that we be entertained. Fullest enjoyment comes from riding the rollercoaster with your chosen group, so we can do that without the nagging voice in the back of our minds saying that there's no good reason to feel as we do about this team who's accomplishments are entirely separate from our own. After all, there is a good reason. Our own entertainment is the goal whatever mindset we must put ourselves in to get it. At the same time we get to scratch that "choosing a side" itch that keeps popping up where it doesn't belong.

That is... weird to me. I've never thought of it that way, and I don't see how that would work. To each their own, though.

its probably because you have never been good or competitive at any sports.

i'm not trying to be a dick, i'm just saying most people that do like sports were competitive in sports since they were little kids and enjoyed it. most kids won't continue to play a sport either if they aren't good at it.

and typically if you aren't good at something and don't see yourself gradually improving, then it isn't going to be fun. if you aren't winning it isn't going to be fun either (for the most part)

i'm as big a nerd as they come (play video games daily, am a software engineer doing programming all day, have IRC running 24 hours on my PC, go to video game tournaments) but i also am not the stereotypical nerd as i play organized football on the weekends and workout 4 days a week and like to go party.

The Greeks had it right, strong mind+strong body = win. Sports are the most fun you can have while working on the strong body part.

I only get into the ones I participate in though. E.G. Winter sports are hard for me to relate to.

professional sports are fun because you get to watch the premier athletes go at it against each other. a lot of the moves they can pull off are almost impossible to do for an average joe.

you have to have some experience playing to have any sort of appreciation for watching it i guess.

That's because they're inherently bad people, and are just looking for a reason to act like animals. If it wasn't sports related, it would be something else.

Oh definitely. Well, maybe not, plenty of them get caught up in the drunken stupor, and because its drunken it too easily goes from good fun to too far.

I'm not saying I dislike them for it but I just can't see being that passionate about it that you memorize so many details about it.

The only annoying thing is that I know 2 people here who will always be home "sick" after the Redskins play. If they win they drink too much celebrating, and when they lose they drink too much because they are upset.

Oh, I didn't mean to infer you were saying that, I was just commenting kinda in general. That second part is pretty :\ though.

I know people look down on cosplayers and people who geek out about stuff, but I actually like them. I think its cool for people to get into something and have fun with it. I always thought it was strange people hating on Trekkies but not having a problem with people who are that way about a sports team.

I totally agree with this. People should do what they want. I may not understand the appeal of sports, but if someone else does then it isn't my place to tell them they shouldn't.

Basically, who cares what anyone else thinks? 🙂 Live your life for you.

I could not give a fuck less about sports either OP and it didn't even take two replies to produce the typical response to that you usually get when you disclose that fact.

I could go into more detail but it's honestly not even worth it. Like what you want to like.

I'll watch a World Cup or a Euro Cup but other than that sports is just an unsatisfactory distraction. Why would I waste my time and money to watch some dude swing a stick or throw a ball? And he gets paid for it. Who is going come over to my cube and pay me $10 to watch me work? "And there he goes winding up his hand with the mouse tightly in his grip. And the click is ... GOOD! Right down the center of the button! It's a home run! The button was clicked perfectly and the on click event has triggered and the game is over folks!"

U kno lots of gay people like sports cuz it's fabulous rite?

Just cruious, what % of those not into sports whatsoever are also not into physical activity?

U fat?

I don't like watching other people play games, and I'm not a team player. "Sports" I've done in the past have been karate, whitewater canoe, biking, and hiking. I've gotten a little soft as I've gotten older, but a lot of that is due to back problems. I don't think I can paddle anymore, because you're in remote areas. I'd be thoroughly fucked if my back went out in the middle of a run. I'm 6'4" 200#

they are kind of boring to watch/follow, but playing them is fun 😀

I agree with this 100%.
I really just don't enjoy watching people play sports enough to really care. Sure its mildly entertaining (sometimes), but I really couldn't care less about "following" a team or a sport.

On a similar topic, it truly boggles my mind how devoted some people are to a certain sports team (or city, or school, etc). I understand people like to belong to a group, but the shear intensity and pervasiveness of the mentality is something I just don't understand.

I grew up in Connecticut and I cringe every time someone asks me Yankees or Red Sox. Its just assumed that EVERYONE from the New England area has to have some strong opinion about it. I don't give a rat's ass about either.

And no, I am not overweight, I played basketball extensively in my youth, and I stay in good physical shape (though I will admit I'm slacking a bit now).
In fact, a good number of people i know that are really into sports are the fat ones. I doubt there is too strong a correlation between weight and one's enjoyment of professional sports.

So OP, you are not alone. It does kinda suck that the small-talk topic of choice always seems to be sports, and i can't contribute much in that area. In fact, that'd be the only reason I'd follow sports is to not be too bored out of my mind when topics of conversation go to sports.

Wierdest thing, my whole life has been playing sports, cheering for sports, following sports, talking sports. Just loved em.
Then something wierd happened this fall, its like a switch just flipped and I'm totally not interested anymore. Of course its hard to ween completely off cold turkey, if its been a habit for 30 years, but this is crazy how uninterested I am.
My Giants finally won a World Series and I barely acknowledged it, had it happened in past years I still would've been excited about it.
Granted the Oilers suck, so maybe that's what killed my interest.

I only follow basketball. I keep up with the standings but only watch matches I consider good. Everyone else seems to watch football.

not really into sports at all..
can enjoy going to a game though..
but really do not go out of my way to even look at scores.
and I'm an IT guy as well.

I don't care at all about sports. I see them as wasted money that could have gone to technology/science research. Not to mention EVERY. SINGLE. ATHLETE. is overpaid by a ton.

Cancer research? Fuck that, let's build a new stadium. The current one is three years old! THE HORROR!

This. QFT.

I participate is solo sports, such as running, for fitness. But I don't follow any televised sports, football, basketball, etc. Its all dull as a door nail.
