Is Angelina Jolie a good actress? What has she actually been good in?

With the Toronto International Film Festival happening right now and with both Pitt and Jolie in town, the fiancee and I randomly happened upon the topic of the pair's acting skills.

I think there's easily enough examples out there of Pitt's acting skills, but we couldn't think of a single stand out role for Jolie. I like her well enough and think she's very attractive, but when it comes to acting chops I'm not sure Jolie has ever proved herself. Does anyone disagree and can name examples?

Salt was pretty good, but Jolie is definitely one of those actors/actresses who really just plays themselves in various skits. Others include:

Nicolas Cage
John Travolta
Tom Cruise
Jimmy Caan
Shia LaBeof
Tim Robbins
Brad Pitt
Tons of others...

Good actors are few and far between. They usually bring about character that makes you forget who they are in real life, which is why the people above aren't good actors by that definition, because they have such stark, extreme, one dimensional personalities.

Christian Bale is a pretty good example of a better than average actor if I had to come up with an A-lister off the cuff.

What the hell is a keyboard porn star?
Anyway it is Jolie's attitude that gets the attention. She may only play herself but that is acting to actually pull off "yourself" in an entirely fictitious setting, and it is interesting to watch the repercussions of her personality in those settings.
I would not have wanted to watch Meryl Streep in Mr and Mrs Smith.

She's a decent actress. She ain't no Julia Roberts, but she is a good enough actress to carry a movie by herself.
