i believe most/all forms of christianity condemn premarital sex. that doesn't mean that said christians won't engage in it, of course.

You're either ignorant or a liar.

Based on your topic title, "Is abstinence from premarrital sex a completely antiquated notion?" I was going to come into this thread with a resounding "No! It entirely depends on what sebculture you are partaking in, since everybody I know in the Christian subculture still practices this."

With your question in the thread of, "Are there any nonfundamentalist christians that still follow this sort of rule/regulation?" it seems to me that there are some but few. From an anecdotal perspective (hardly the soundest scientific means) it seems to me that only fundamental Christians these days tend to abide by abstinence.

Does that answer the question? I'm just not sure which one you were asking. There are plenty of people who practice abstinence if you include fundamental Christians, but if you exclude them I would say most people do not.

A liar? That was an opinion.......

Anywho, I didn't realize people still practiced abstence these days. I see religion has a fairly decent hold on people still today.

Guess I'm ignorant b/c I speak the truth

Well, certainly people in the Bible weren't perfect when it came to faithful, marital sex.

For some people sex is viewed as a special thing to be shared only by people in love enough to get married. For others, sex is something to be saved until marriage due to religious beliefs. Some people are scared of having kids or getting an STD.

I fall into the last category there.

I don't think it's antequated to abstain, it's just not the popular thing to do these days.

Ok I'll give in that 1~2% of the guys who say this actually mean it for religious/spiritual/moral reasons but the other 98% are saying it because they haven't got any yet (and probably don't know any better), they are hoping for pity sex from the experienced girl, or b/c they want to sleep with another virgin their first time.

I'm curious did you stop for religious or personal reasons? How long have you known/dated the girl? And how old are you?

There are non-fundies who still follow it... anyone have a biblical ref for it being forbidden?

1 Corinthians 7:8-9
Exodus 20:14
Levitcus 20:10
Proverbs 6:32

And now, for something completely different: Jesus' take on adultery with +100 forgiveness

those are all references to adultry except for the first one... and even that doesn't say you can't... it's just better to be married

Sorry, I should have picked out the definition of adultery along with the rest.
Matthew 5:28 No mention of marital status there.
Adultery, in the Bible, includes regular fornication. Any sex outside of marriage constitutes adultery.

Agreed. I especially think it's impractical as an answer to Sex related issues(disease, Teen Pregnancy, etc). However, if someone can do it, it's far from antiquated and is very practical.

dont be so sure about that

I would say that if they take on a religion at all, odds are they're christian.

Oh and thanks for the bible verses. That may come in handy if I write my final paper on this topic.

Personally, I think that it is. I sure as hell wouldn't want to wait until I married someone to find out that they have no sex drive.

They should really translate that idea when they print Bibles. If adultery in modern English doesn't have the same meaning as it does in the Bible, they should have used a different word or added more words to make it clear.

If you want anything more, there's the story of David and Bathsheba, or Samson and Delilah, which illustrates that while the Bible line on extra-marital sex is harsh, the big Biblical heroes didn't always pay it much mind. Not to mention Solomon.

There are Bibles that do, I think, though I'm not familiar enough with any of them to really talk to their accuracy on translations from the original texts. I just grabbed from the NIV because it was the default translation available on that site. 🙂
