Is a GTX 770 4GB still a relevant player in the mid-high end?

A local seller has a 4GB GTX 770 for approximately $200ish.

My question, is there any better value card for the money at this price point? Or should I snap it up? From what I can tell through reading various reviews and benchmarks, this card can hang with a 280X which costs about the same. I've always been partial to Nvidia.

I would say it is almost on par with a R9 280x.

A GTX 770 of 4GB is an appropriate price at 180$ - 200$ but I would personally go with a R9 280x. Or extend a little and get a R9 290.

If the price is 200 - 210 then its a good deal for GTX 770 4GB. but without a doubt the best value for money is the R9 290. the Sapphire R9 290 OC Tri-Xs are selling for USD 270 (250 after rebate) with 4 free games. These perform on par with GTX Titan at 1080p and slightly faster at 1440p.

you could sell the games to bring down your cost or enjoy the games. my advice is go with sapphire R9 290 Tri-X. just keep watching the price at newegg and buy it when it comes to USD 270 (250 after rebate)

I've seen 290s sell for 220-230 dollars some days. A far better card for far better value.

Absolutely. I sold a used 770 for $200.00 a few months ago, and this was before the huge price drops on the 290/290X. I'd say a fair price for one is about $175.00 now.

I see a bunch of 280x locally going for $140-180 used I would grab one of those instead, just my opinion.

As a general question (and not a price check), yeah, they're fine for mid to high settings on new games.

$180-200 for a 770 4GB is way too expensive, should be like $150. An after-market R9 290 is 25% faster and that lead extends even in modern titles and when overclocked. Considering you can buy a brand new after-market R9 290 for $260 in the US for 4 free games, I am sure you can find a used R9 290 for close to $200-220.

If you only want to buy NV, keep looking for a cheaper 770 4GB or wait until GTX960 drops next year.

The gap between the 770 and the 290 isnt much in terms of money and is quite noticeable in terms of performance

Thanks guys, appreciate the input.

If I could get a 290 for as cheap as you, i'd be all over it! Unfortunately here in Canada, the 290 selloff isn't as prevalent. Newegg.ca really doesn't have anything with a meaningful discount right now. :( All of the 290's are well over $300.

There has been only one recent sale of note (Black Friday) where a retailer had a 290 for $269 but they sold out quickly.

200 used? nah, you can get a 280x new for that in Canada (ie with the games).

for instance:
http://www.ncix.com/detail/club-3d-radeon-r9-280-65-94998.htm

The 770 (2 or 4) made budgetary sense during the OOS extravaganza that was bitcoin mining circa this time last year. Since then, unless you really favor Nvidia, you pay a lot (LOT) more for one over the 280x, or a little more than even the 290 (new).

Our prices here in the north have not come down nearly as much as the US, but the relative price is pretty close to in line, just that everything is a good bit more expensive... yay.

Have you considered just buying the 290 off EBay?

There is a Sapphire Tri-X 290 from Quebec for $250 with shipping included:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAPPHIRE-TR...077?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item3f4278ab4d

I am sure you can find even better deals if you look. The difference in the latest/demanding titles between a 770 and a 290 is massive. An after-market 290 such as Sapphire Tri-X ~ reference 290X!

Seriously well worth the extra $70-80!

You gotta look harder for a used R9 290, and make sure to get an after-market version or at least with an Accelero cooler.

NCIX has a brand new Club 3D version for $299 CDN. Shouldn't be too hard to find a used 290 locally for $250 on Kijiji or Craiglist.

I concur, if you don't mind used (I don't like used but each to his/her own) a 290 seems the best bet. If you don't mind lowering settings in future games to play at 60+FPS then a 290 is sufficent IMO.
