It's not for big time games or anything.. :)

keyboard mouse, possibly speakers

$400.00 + tax

this is one of the best deals I've seen at Walmart, especially if it is coming with a 15" LCD monitor, and generally speaking, a free OS, most likely it will have an AGP8x port for graphics upgrade, as most Sempron-based 2005 CPU+boards do.

The Sempron is most likely a Socket A type. The graphics are integrated. Probably only AGP 4x upgrade if it even has an AGP slot. Also the memory will probably only be 2700 max. Plus the LCD will be crap, and the 5 watt speakers that come with systems today are BS. Not like my 4.1 Altec Lansings with the 40 x 4 and 60 watt subwoofer that came with my Dell. Its packs quite a punch in my little 10x10 computer room.

My, what an ironic avatar name you have BlackJesus.

Definitely, I would go with a Emachines or Dell for that pricepoint. Being an AMD machine owner, well, three AMD machines but who's counting, I would go with the Emachines myself over the Intel (not that there is anything wrong with Intel ;)

I believe you can get an OEM copy of XP for $60

Not because they are great computers. Because they are dirt cheap computers, and if you get a friend, coworker, neighbor to buy a Dell instead of building them a PC you won't need to provide lifetime free tech support and parts replacement.

You'll learn the hard way that building for others is usually a bad idea. For parents when you're often there it should be OK though.

What are you talking about? My parents/friends have prebuilt computers and I get asked for help all the time..

So, can a 400 dollar system be built?

My answer is yes, but please don't, if you spent just 300 dollars more, your system would last at least 2 years instead of 6 months.

The Sempron Compaq SR1610nx has the 64bit Sempron and Radeon Xpress200 built
in graphics (up to 128 shared memory)
There's no video slots just PCI (2) Open with 4 memory slots.

Of course it's no game computer but still worlds better than a Celeron IMHO.
It's $380.
