Is a $400 System Build Possible?

My parents have asked me to try to build them a new system for around 400 dollar sincluding the case. I would like it to be an Athlon 64 processor, but any other spec is open for suggestions. Can a decent system be built for this price?

Id get a dell for them, just because they will always be having you fix the computer.
And a computer that price can be made but is it worth it?

I should note they don't need a monitor and fixing the computer is not a problem since i'm still in school so I am home quite often.

Unless you already have a $100 copy of WinXP laying around, then no. Just go to dell.com, I've seen pc's with monitors for $400 after MIR all the time.

The Biostar Tforce board has good reviews at newegg and on the main AnandTech website.

This isdoable, though around $450
$150 Tforce + Sempron 2800+ retail
$50 512 MB RAM
$50 cheap HD
$30 DVD-ROM/CDRW
$20 OEM KB-mouse (Microsoft's $15 keyboard is decent)
$50 cheap case
$100 XP Home

I should note that I am willing to spend 400 on the hardware alone. Windows will be purchased seperately. -Rob

Not because they are great computers. Because they are dirt cheap computers, and if you get a friend, coworker, neighbor to buy a Dell instead of building them a PC you won't need to provide lifetime free tech support and parts replacement.

You'll learn the hard way that building for others is usually a bad idea. For parents when you're often there it should be OK though.

walmart, I am not lying

brand new

sempron
512mb DDR
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
15" LCD
XP HOME
keyboard mouse, possibly speakers

$400.00 + tax

this is one of the best deals I've seen at Walmart, especially if it is coming with a 15" LCD monitor, and generally speaking, a free OS, most likely it will have an AGP8x port for graphics upgrade, as most Sempron-based 2005 CPU+boards do.

I've been buying new comps at work from CompUSA.

Compaq has a Sempron 3200+ which is 64bit Sempron.
It has DVD Rom/CDRW - 256K DDR@400mhz and decent
hard drive $429 with $50 rebate.

THey also have Centron 512MB PC3200 DDR for $37 after rebate.

Not bad for $400..better than most Dell.

Also it has Radeon 200 built in graphics..fairly decent.

You can walk down to the store and buy it with no shipping.
