Is 84c too hot?

I just bought a 2600K and running some programs. I installed the standard HSF but used some Arctic Silver 3 I had lying around. Apparently, it is no good but I have no other choice right now until I get some more somewhere.

Is it dangerous to run the CPU at this temp?

I've heard 82 is the upper limit and even more that intel actually rates the upper range around 72c (this is for the i7 non SB) So yeah, that seems quite warm, I would just head out to radio shack and grab some AS5 for 10 dollars, just to be on the safe side.

TJMAX is around 100C for Bloomfield and Sandy bridge

What programs? What's the CPU load when it hits that temp? And why not just use the TIM that came with CPU? How did you apply the AS3?

Speaking of thermal paste, is there a particular brand/version that people rate highly? Or should I just use the stuff that Intel includes with the CPU?

I removed the thermal paste (using rubbing alcohol) from the stock HSF and replaced it with my old AS3 thinking it would be better. At idle it was about 67c which I know is way too hot but when I starting transferring files over from one drive to another, the temps spiked to 84c sustained. I don't know what the load is. My build is really screwed up. I'm not sure how this new UEFI bios works. The multiplier is locked at 34x even though my chip is a 2600K yet when I used CPUZ, it was maxing out at 4.5Ghz. Also, the frequency was 103mhz even though I force it at 100mhz. It switches over to 103 for some reason. I didn't tamper with the bios at all yet. All I want is a stable rig for the time being.

Edit: My MB is an Asus P8P67 Deluxe.

$300 cpu, $150 mobo - why trust that to the stock fan? Always go aftermarket.

There are a ton of good aftermarket solutions to choose from between $45-80.

Yeah, when I was at Microcenter I was checking out all of the HSFs there. They didn't have the one I wanted so I decided to wait. The chip supposedly performs well with the stock HSF though.

If your going to overclock why would you even consider using the stock fan?

But I thought that with the stock fan temps were supposed to be in the low 30's at the most at idle?

Still doesn't sound right to me, but since I haven't purchase one yet I can't say for sure.

Most were tested on an open air bench. Temps will be different inside a case.

Unless the ambient was crazy-low, a case is usually better for temps than an open-air case design because it has directed air flow. This is, of course, excluding those with multi-GPU setups and poor case airflow management. :)

I agree these temps are not right; at stock speeds, on the stock cooler, the SB chips are very cool.

Yeah from what I've seen, idle temps should be in the low 30's and full load should be low 60's just with the stock cooler and a decent case with good airflow. Unless you have crazy voltages applied I imagine.

a review I had read suggested that the with stock cooler (which is a decent one). the 2600K should idle around 29c, and at load (PRIME95 for 15 min or so) . hit around 60c... With an aftermarket air cooler.. the max temp was around 50C.....

So it would seem it's a bad mount, or incorrect application of thermal paste?

i'm going with bad mount. stock cooler is still pushpins, right? make sure those are all in all the way. they can look like they're in and not be in.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I didn't want the OP to ruin his nice new chip or setup, even though it would shut down automatically if it got too hot.

If it really is running 4.5GHz at the time you checked temperatures, then 84°C is not out of the question for moderate loads with the stock HSF.

TIM also takes a few cycles to cure and become its most effective.

I was planning on eventually OCing but right now I wanted a stable rig since my last build conked out two weeks ago. It lasted over 3 yrs so the timing wasn't bad. I was looking to buy a certain Noctua HSF from SVC but it's been out of stock so I'm just waiting. I don't want to pay up just yet when I don't need it.

I don't think it's a bad mount. I'll check again but everything is clicked in and locked tight. It might be bad AC3 like someone mentioned. It's pretty old. It was from my previous build and could be even older. I'll just pick some new AC5 today at Radio Shack and test it out.

I didn't OC the rig though. I left everything stock in the bios. I don't know why it's changing the bclk to 103. The multiplier is locked at 34 and there is no way to change it. It is grayed out. I don't really understand the bios on this thing. This GUI is different than the menus on my old Asus P5K Deluxe I had. Yet under CPUz the CPU idles at 1.6ghz and goes up to 4.5ghz when doing something. All I've done so far is reinstall programs and transfer files over to the new rig. I haven't even done anything stressful yet unless posting on Anandtech is considered stressful.

Edit: Also, the chip idles at 68c so something is wrong.

I'm seeing similar temps loaded in the 4.4 GHz range, under 30 idle.

Stable or not I'm not comfortable with those temperatures so I'll be looking for an alternative.

Anybody tried the full size heatpipe towers yet? I have a Noctua running dual fans on my S775 box I'm replacing, while I'm sure it won't clear the Vengeance RAM with both fans maybe one would work?

I would love to see how the Noctua does on SB
