I consider anything above mid 50c to be too hot. 84c is way too hot for a cpu.

$300 cpu, $150 mobo - why trust that to the stock fan? Always go aftermarket.

There are a ton of good aftermarket solutions to choose from between $45-80.

Definitely get a high quality cooler. Stock just doesn't cut it.

You don't even need high end. Just get a 212+ for 29.99

Is the 212 any smaller than the Noctua or similar (TRUE, Megahalem, etc)? I was looking at getting one but I see it's 120mm so I'm not sure I'd be any better off with that space wise.

I just overnighted a Noctua 1366/1156 bracket kit from Amazon so I'll have it tomorrow. By the time I tear down the old machine I'll have all the parts to try the Noctua.

Pretty sure the 212 is a lot smaller then the TRUE. I used to have a mega shadow and that thing was massive

Can you provide any reason for choosing 50C as the limit? I personally think it's wiser to go with what the manufacturer says.

I had the 212 in hand at Microcenter thinking about getting it but I have Noctua fans and from experience I really liked the quietness so I wanted to get the Noctua HSF. So Viper_GTS, is your setup running hot on a Noctua?

I was looking at this:

Noctua

Maybe I should go with the 212 and a 120mm fan. I have a bunch of Scythe fans sitting around that I can probably replace the stock ones with.

Edit: I picked up some AS5 at Radio Shack during lunch so I'll see how that goes.

Maybe for AMD, but Intel chips are tougher when it comes to temps. They can go all the way to 85-90C, and still run reliably, although it might degrade the CPU slightly running at those temps.

At least, my E2140 @ 2.8, 1.425v BIOS, ran at up to 86C on both cores according to CoreTemp, and survived about three years (just replaced it with a Q9300 @ 3.0, stock voltage (1.225v)).

Sorta relevant to the topic at hand... how long does TIM last once opened? I have some tubes of AS5 that I bought a good 3+ years ago that still have the caps and look fine, but I don't know how long they are actually supposed to last.

I also have many other types, some opened some not, that I either bought or received with heat sinks including ceramique, zalman CSL 850, evercool EC420, thermalright (no number), vantec (no number), rosewill (no number), AC (no number), and some unmarked tubes....

Probably should throw some of that away ;)

i'm still using a now-ancient tube of AS5. works fine on my 212+

Nice to know. I finally threw away my tube of AS3 from who knows how long ago...

I did notice that my A70 came with a small tube of TIM. Anyone know how that compares to AS5?

don't tell me this thing runs so hot at stock clocks, you must be playing with voltages and oc.

I updated the bios but nothing changed. I didn't bother changing the thermal paste. I'm probably going to go get a 212 HSF tomorrow. It's supposed to be Snowmageddon II tomorrow so I can hunker down, work from home and get this rig up and running.

I just bought a 2600K and running some programs. I installed the standard HSF but used some Arctic Silver 3 I had lying around. Apparently, it is no good but I have no other choice right now until I get some more somewhere.

Is it dangerous to run the CPU at this temp?

not that it matters at this point since you're getting the new cooler tomorrow, but I also agree that it has to be a mounting issue. In my experience no matter what you use or do with thermal paste, if it is mounted securely, the temps should not get that hot. 84C is crazy considering you were just moving files which takes up next to no CPU cycles. I imagine it would overheat under a full load pretty quickly.

Good luck with the new cooler! If its not a BIOS/Software auto jacking your volts somewhere, you should be good after applying the new HSF!

Anybody tried the full size heatpipe towers yet?
Viper GTS

I've got an Asrock board coming in thursday that supports 775 coolers so I am going to pop this guy (Tunic Tower) off my Q6600 and onto my 2600k and see what we get! Also plan to use the same Arctic Silver 5 from that build 3 yrs ago! I would have ordered new stuff but I totally forgot so screw it! o_O

OP, that Noctua is a good cooler. If you have any extra 120mm fans laying around, might as well get the Megahalems for $50.

By the way I really like the look of those Megahalems!!!

OK, Hyper 212+ showed up today. Stock fan is a few mm too thick on my Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD5, my Vengeance RAM won't fit under it. I've mounted it the opposite direction for now, I'll have to decide how I want to deal with this. The problem is the fan itself MIGHT fit, it's the brackets they use + the rubber isolation pads that make it just a bit too much.

A wire clip mounted fan might work (pushing out the back of the case) or just mount a single fan in a pull config on the opposite side.

Load temps went from pushing 80°C with the stock cooler to mid 50's @ 4.2 GHz. I've pushed all the way to 1.35V for now to see if I can get that stable, it failed after 15 hours of IntelBurnTest with 1.325.

I can't even make it into windows at 4.5/4.6 GHz, 4.4 is about the best I can do getting into windows.

I used to rock that bad boy on my Q6600 @ 3.4ghz. But mine wasn't lapped like yours. :) This should tame SB without problems. The Tuniq Tower was in the top 2 best coolers at one time, along with the TRUE 120. Too bad Tuniq Tower 2 is nowhere near the top dogs.

BTW, the Thermalright Archon seems to be the best air cooler out at the moment. With just 1 fan it already matches dual fan Silver Arrow/Noctua NH-D14!!!

Thanks for all the advice!

I just installed a Hyper 212+ as well using AS5. I've gotten the temps down to 53c at 1.23v according to Sisandra. CPU is running at 4.314Ghz according to CPUz. I still don't know why it's OCing like it is. There really isn't anything in the bios that I can change. Multiplier is grayed out at 34, blck is at 103 despite my attempts to lower it to 100, memory is at DDR3 13333 even though it's 16000. I'm going to have to do more research on this.

IF 84c is your load temp that is way to high.

TJMAX CPU I believe should shut down once you hit 85c Or I may be wrong with the SB.

Good temps are 30's 40's idle, and 50's 60's c full load.
