What i've gathered is that i should slow down some untill i have more experience, and posibly a better car to handle speed.

Pretty much. I've been driving 6 years and I still dont like hitting 80 on the freeway as a cruising speed.

Lol, speeding is NOT a crime. it is an infraction of a statute governing mv operator behavior. I've been stopped well exceeding a hundred mph, and officer didnt treat me like a criminal...just warning though. One gave me an escort to my destination...(called in to work the ER after a schoolbus crash brought in 36 patients)
However, wreckless endangerment or negligence can be considered criminal offence in some jurisdictions. Over 30mph over limit, dui, racing, can be construed endangerment.

80 is not too fast, provided operator is experienced. A blow out, or other happenstance, can change things quickly. Try learning to drive at 80 on frozen lake....now thats fun!

Well 80 in a 55 is wreckless driving and you go to JAIL. I'd say that is a crime.

yup 75-80mph are pretty normal on all interstates not just socal. But I've seen my mpg go up from slowing down the speedo some. 🙂
Ok, put the crack pipe down and let's get back into reality. The only way you'd go to jail for doing 80 in a 55, is if the cop was busting you for something OTHER than speeding. Let's quit spreading bullsh!t, shall we.

They put you in jail for not causing wrecks?😕

We can, yes. Wreckless endangerment. Depends on your speed, traffic conditions, your driving behavior...among other things

That's truly amazing! And all this time I thought I thought the penalty was for being reckless. Little did I know....if you want to get out of a ticket, just cause a wreck!

I'm sorry, that's just one of the spelling errors that really bugs me, like brakes/breaks.

What kind of mucked up state puts you in jail for 80 in a 55?

I smell shens.

In my state they can't put you in jail for speeding unless its like 60 MPH over or something ridiculous. Otherwise it is a ticket a possible suspension of license that is waived anyway.

Technically in NY they can throw revoke your license for going more than 20mph over, which means that you have to get driven back to the Police Station, and stay there until you can get a ride. This is rarely enforced though, i was in the car when my dude was doin 90mph in a 55 in his G35, it was his first ticket, and the guy only clocked it in at 76 or sumthing to be nice.

I think the only real problem is that you are new to driving. I am 23 and have been driving 6+ years. I know for a fact that I am a better driver now than I was when I was 18. I would keep it around 70 until I had been on the road longer. Also, a Mercury Sable isnt exactly a sports car. 80mph is pushing the limits of that car's ability to handle *well*

Agreed. I'm 22 with a LOT of racing experience under my belt. Unfortunately, none of it was on the track.

I had a 1991 Mercury Sable and would do 80-85 on the freeways fine. The car was stable, I'd never drive recklessly (no fast or frequent lane changes, no tailgating, never in heavy traffic) and was fine. Not really driving right now (living on campus without a car), but 80-85 was fine in saint louis as long as conditions were good for it. Here in Houston it seems 90-95 is more accepted on an empty dry freeway, but my old sable had a speedo that only went to 85, heh.

No, because it is against the law. Simple as that. Its like me saying I will murder someone because I feel like it and I can get away with it.

Equating murder to speeding is like calling grandma's rose garden a redwood forest.

The law is the law.

LOL.. what are you 12?
or just another Blind ass cop loving fool?
or worse yet a gung ho cop?
nm doesnt matter still a dumbass..

Actually I was an EMT for a few years. So unless you have seen someones face peeled off of asphalt or seen the reaction of a guy who just finds out his best friend is dead because he was speeding, I don't think you should judge.

Oh please get off your little soapbox..
Ive have seen way worse than you ever will in the Motorcycle community + 10 years of Military..
ive seen just as many fatal accidents happen at low speeds as high...
For facts on high speed drivign vs low speed look up saftey records for the Autobaun vs US highways.. speed DOES NOT KILL.. CRAPPY TRAINED DRIVERS DO...

Its not speed here that kills its drivers that shouldnt be driving a car period at any speed that are allowed to have licenses..

The records for the autobahn are way better than any of our highways over any amount of time.

but thier licensing program is 4x as hard as ours.

80mph to a properly trained driver is like doing 20mph to anyone else..

the problem with US drivers is.. instead of watching what they are doing and concentrating on the road they are...
Slapping the kids...
putting on makeup..
adjusting the Air.. DVD.. CD.. or MP3 player..
shaving...
reading a book or map...
etc etc etc..
Driving is not somthing that needs to be done while distracted.. thats why Ill take a motorcycle rider over a car driver any day... not only are they trained better but they tend to take in everything around them and have absolute concentration when riding...
usually bikers die becasue car drivers are inattentive or distracted.

Fact is there is a direct correlation between the speed of a vehicle and the chance of a fatality. I understand you think that being a biker makes your knowledge more reliable than hundreds of statistical studies, but I think I will stick with those statistics and my experience thank you.

LOL... all you have to do is use google and search...
it was on history channel.. Discovery.. and TLC.. every time the do a bit on the Autobahn or Autostradas or other Euro superhighways where the speedlimits are higher or nonexistant we get comapred to them..
the truth is there is no relation in accdients to speed..
it all comes down to training...
and if you are old as you say you are.. you should remember that the national US speedm limit was not lowered for safety... but for GAS REASONS...
for many years some states with low pops including nevada and wyoming had highways with no offical speedlimits imposed.
and there were no stats that say it was more dangerous to anyone...

I dont think you are as old as you say you are or you would remeber those days...
the ONLY reason the US has lower limits than the rest of the wold is gas.. and oil prices and our heavy handed government trying to tell us whats good for us...

You missed his point. I believe what he was saying is that higher speed = greater chance of death should an accident occur. Not only that, but just because YOU are a good driver doesn't mean other people are.

That being said, to the OP...depends on traffic.

That was exactly what I said.. its not that speed kills its that improperly trained drivers do...

and unplanned events...
blowouts
brake failure
deer crossing and other unwarned road obstructions

even the best trained driver can still have accidents no matter what speed, and they are more likely to occur at higher speeds.

Heck no... I do ~64; better fuel mileage.

EDIT: Oh, and to the huge "debate" above: the law is there to be obeyed. If you don't have to obey the speed limit... then why not drive through stop signs... then why not drive through red lights... it's there for our own good, and does best if we all obey it.

If you know hwo to drive, and have a reliable car... then I think its fine.

I drive an 2002 Mercury Sable, i've had my Liscence 6months...

I think everybody is missing the key point here...you were driving in the Boonies. I grew up in Western New York, and driving in the Boonies at 80 mph during the day is suicidal, let alone at 10PM!!

You are going to have minimal sight distance (it's pitch black out...it's just you and your headlights), big steep inclines and valleys, sharp turns, and dry or not there will be dirt and pebbles on the road, and on top of that you have to watch out for deer. Your eyes have to be glued to the road at pretty much all times, and since you've only been driving six months you can't know the roads all that well. People who grew up in cities have no idea what country driving is like. Driving at night in a city doesn't even compare to the Boonies of Western New York.

80mph is no way no how, 65 would be pushing it, perfect conditions or not.

I was on i81, if you really did grow up in Western NY, you know where that is...

I grew up in Franklinville, NY...bout 20 minutes north of Olean...used to take 17 (now 86). If i remember correctly 81 runs throught Binghamton, yeah?

Go NASCAR!

Lite traffic durring the day 80 is fine.

At night you maybe out driving your head lights.

If your safe breaking distance is greater than your viewing distance SLOW DOWN.

"I never saw the deer comming"

If it is a full moon and or a lighted highway then 70 ot 75 tops. Don't go too fast to stop.

Shouldn't be an issue with that car, just dont do it in a hummer/large truck please. I think they should pass a law that allows deloreans to go at 88 mph on all roads lol.
