during the day, it's pretty rare to get above 120 km/h on the 401 through toronto.

~ 80-90mph everyday to and back from work. Not like this if it is raining though...

No.

I've gone 115 with no problems. If you can't safely maintain a vehicle at 100 miles per hour in good conditions on a freeway, you shouldn't have a license at all.

I've driven a ~1990 hatchback (1.1l engine Metro) at 85mph without issue, but it can't even GO 100mph, let alone be safely maintainable at that speed.

Well, I'm talking about a vehicle in general. Say a well tuned $15K sedan.

I'm not saying that everyone should go 100, just that they should have the reflexes and coordination to be able to. Hey, my poor old Ford Festiva couldn't make it over 85.

I would do 80 all the time, but I get paranoid about cops. This is in the Orlando area. Parts of town are really dumb though. On I-4, the speed limit will be 50 or 55, depends on the area, and everybody does at least 65, and 70-75 feels peachy keen, doesn't feel at all too fast for the road conditions, visiblity, etc. And that's like 20-25 over the speed limit. I see cops doing 65+ in these 50/55 zones as well all the time, with cars driving right next to them, and they never pull anybody over. Now, pass that same cop that's doing 65, at like 70, and I bet he does =)

80 is perfectly fine on the open road.

In Texas the maximum speed is whatever is reasonable and prudent.

Wait wait wait, you have had your liscense for 6 months and you are already trying to argue in favor of going >80Mph!? You have to be crazy.

Normally, on I-95 i will sit around 75. 80Mph is what the Left Lane tends to drive at. Anything above and including that is unsafe. I made it to 90 (Took my poor truck like 2 minutes to make it there from 65) and not only was i scared i might get pulled over, but your steering is so much harder. For those reason i dont want to do it again (Mostly because of the cop and how much more danger you put others in). You touch the wheel in one direction you are going that way fast. Not only that the roads are NOT meant to carry cars that are driving that fast.

Slow down, at least get some experience under your belt... at the very least. Other than that the choice is yours, but 80mph is definitely unsafe in most places where traffic is generally going at least 10MPH slower (Springfield, VA).

The most efficient point for a car is a shade above idle in top gear. On a mainstream car, this is certainly below 60mph, espicially with the wealth of 4 speed automatics in America.

I think most Americans forget that we have pretty low speed limits. City freeway speed limits are often 55 or lower. Limits in the middle of nowhere go up to 70 (maybe a little more). Europe has plenty of 80 or higher highways. There are still unregulated parts in Italy and Germany. No one is crying about those.

Lol, speeding is NOT a crime. it is an infraction of a statute governing mv operator behavior. I've been stopped well exceeding a hundred mph, and officer didnt treat me like a criminal...just warning though. One gave me an escort to my destination...(called in to work the ER after a schoolbus crash brought in 36 patients)
However, wreckless endangerment or negligence can be considered criminal offence in some jurisdictions. Over 30mph over limit, dui, racing, can be construed endangerment.

80 is not too fast, provided operator is experienced. A blow out, or other happenstance, can change things quickly. Try learning to drive at 80 on frozen lake....now thats fun!

Well 80 in a 55 is wreckless driving and you go to JAIL. I'd say that is a crime.

yup 75-80mph are pretty normal on all interstates not just socal. But I've seen my mpg go up from slowing down the speedo some. :)
Ok, put the crack pipe down and let's get back into reality. The only way you'd go to jail for doing 80 in a 55, is if the cop was busting you for something OTHER than speeding. Let's quit spreading bullsh!t, shall we.

Exactly...you don't go to jail for 80 in a 55...not even 100 in a 55...

Trust me...I know :(

It's coo if you can handle it. I've driven at 90MPH on I-285, I-75, and I-85 over where I live. I'm not always the fastest one out there anyways. Since the gas prices have started going up, though, I have slowed down. Just trying to save my gas.

Depends on the driver, I driven over 5 years and never had an accident. I have been known to hit 90 on I94, but 70 in 55 is usually ok, and 75 in 65 seems ok, 80-90 in a 70 is good. All these hinge on you knowing the roads and the speed traps!!!

Actually gas powered engines run more efficiently at higher speeds. As for the endangering everyone argument, everyone does that each time the get behind the wheel of a vehicle regardless of speed. The way I see it is that if you are traveling the same speed or slightly(5mph) faster than those around you then it's fine if you are over the limit. If you are zippin' past everyone like they are standing still you need to slow down. You also need to know what your vehicle will and won't do. In my car I've done 40mph ramps at 60. Would I do it if road wasn't perfectly dry, there was traffic around me, or in a truck/suv? No, no, and hell no but I know that my car will stick it as long as it is dry. As a disclaimer I don't recommend doing this often, if you get caught, that's all she wrote.

A car has a lot of variables. You're only considering the engine, which is a good place to start. However, to a large extent, air friction is proportional to the square of the speed. If you plot fuel economy with respect to speed, you'll see a U-shaped curve with very steep sides. Your car will get better gas milage at 35 than it will at 5, but it'll get better gas milage at 70 than it will at 100.

Plus, the efficiency of a gas engine starts to drop at higher rpm's due to incomplete combustion. Fuel vapors don't burn instantaneously; they require time to extract the chemical energy and convert it to heat. This is why high-revving Ferrari motors use many cylinders with smaller displacements. The flame is allowed to propogate along a smaller volume, increasing the time it takes for the WHOLE chamber to be burned. Large diesels don't necessarily need to have small chambers because they turn slowly to start with. (Plus, their ignition is much faster because they burn their fuel from the heat of the compressed air, not from a spark.)

Most super cars break often, and parts are expensive and scarce. Lamborghini is no exception. The closest thing you'll come to a reliable super car is either an Acura NSX or a Ford GT. (The GT gets its reliability from a large motor.)

I live in the middle of Atlanta where I-75/I-85 is 8 lanes wide, busy as hell, and has a max speed limit of 55. If you drive @ 55, 65, or even 70 most of the time you get run over. Normal traffic flows about 75mph here, so 80 really isn't a big deal as long as you're not passing people, your car is in tip-top shape, there's no weather issues, and you know how to handle your vehicle if something bad happens. 65-70 though is about as fast as you can go at night UNLESS the highway is well lit in front of you; your headlights are pretty worthless at lighting up things that far in front of you. If your headlights are that bright though, do me a favor and turn off your fake-Xenon high beams when you burn by me :)
