Is 50C too high for the non anal retentive?

I just got an XP 2K+ and I undervolted the fan to 5V. It gets to 50C under load. I don't really care if the temp is on the high side as long as the CPU doesn't burn up next week.

If it's the retail HSF the undervolt is for sure a bad idea, did you 5volt it?

ps: I say it's a bad idea because I've done it for an old K6-2 system

It's not the retail HSF, the heatsink is about 50% bigger than the HS that comes with retail XP 2k+. I'm running the fan off a 5V lead on the PS.

Oh ok, how dose it do on warm days? That temp is fine as long as it dose not get over 55 to 57.

That's what worries me, it's middle of winter and december right now. I just got the setup so I dunno how it'll run during the summer. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye out or pull a bit more voltage out for it.

I'd at least do 7 volts for now, if it's cool in your room and that's the temp then it'll start to freeze on you in the summer time without a doubt .

yeah ok, tomorrow off to radio shaft to get some parts to adjust the voltage.

One thing to remember about cooling the thing is the ambient case temperature. You could have the absolute best heatsink and fan on your cpu, but if your case itself has a poor airflow setup, it won't matter what you put on the cpu. Personally I use the Antec sx830 case and have never had temperature problems. Granted, I do not overclock my cpu, but my video card is overclocked and I didn't need any extra modifications to the card because the ambient case temperature is on the low side.

Just a thought for ya. :)

according to my mobo sensor, the case temp is 26C, which is about room temp. It's pretty much all HSF.

My last computer was 3 yrs old so it's kind of troubling how hot modern cpus run. :(

I concur. My crappy cooling setup has been super stable for more almost two years around 50-55°C.

50? 55? 57? Child's play each and every one. That chip will run flawlessly at a steady 65-68c! I know, cause I've run a TBird and my current XP1700 at those temps with no problem. I must add though, that if your mobo uses an in the socket(under cpu) heat sensor, then actual cpu temps can vary significantly from the reported temp. Anyway, 50c is nothing to worry about.

50 is fine. You won't run any faster at 40 C compared to running the same thing at 50 C. Some people just get a little crazy with it.

I undervolted my 1700+ (w/ stock HSF) and idle temp is around 48C. Just to see how hot it will go, I put a space heater near the front of the case, by the intake fans. Watching the CPU temp as well as the case temp, after an hour of benchmarking it never hit 60C. Runs fine and very, very quiet as all the fans, including the case fans are undervolted. All I hear is my WD hard drives

How is it that you can claim that all you hear is your hard drives? I don't get it. I've been trying to quiet my rig, but it still seems loud to me. I have stock 2100xp hs w/ 60mm-80mm adaptor running a Vantec Stealth 80mm @ 2100prm. I Removed my stock northbridge fan. I also run two 80mm Vantec Stealth case fans@ 2100rpm. The only other noise maker in my rig is stock ATI ALL IN ONE 8500 fan. I can't hear my WD hard drive.

Don't forget you PS fans, they can be very loud.

Damn, you're fine. I'm running 50c right now on idle. As it gets cooler it will likely drop to 48c. Last night while playing UT03 it was 58c. I really don't care, as long as it doesn't go past it's limit which I believe is 70c for max junction temp.

Antec Truepower 330 psu, maybe thats making all the noise. Can someone recommend a quiet psu for my rig.

Sorry, sometimes I get off on a tangent
