Is 50C too high for the non anal retentive?

I was having lockups and so I volted the HSF back up to 12V and it doesn't hang anymore. It got as high as ~53C at 5V and I guess that was causing lockups.

My motherboard is the ECS K7S5A, is there any particular reason I have to keep my cpu significantly cooler than everyone else's? Or do I have a bad CPU? Nothing is overclocked and it's an AGOIA XP2K+.

I need recommendations for a CPU cooler now that's quiet, something less than 30 dB I guess.

Thermalright SLK-800 or SX-7

Alpha PAL8045 (if your MoBo has the four mounting holes around the CPU socket)

Any of these heatsinks with your choice of fans such as the adjustable Ystech, Panaflo L1A or M1A, etc and you should be fine as long as your case airflow is good.

Thx, yeah my case temp reads off as 26C.

This really bothers me though, if ~5C makes the difference between stable and unstable, what the hell is going to happen when summer comes around and ambient temp reaches ~100F (38C)?

something is wrong somewhere. 53* isn't enough to lock an athlon up. that is assuming that the temp is actually 53*. maybe the diode is underreporting the temp. in this case, i would go get a nice big performance cooler.

Yeah actually it crashed again even with the fan at 12V. It just took a bit longer.

I hate computers. Maybe I'll go build me a 486 and be done with computers forever.

K7S5A boards are picky with PSU's for sure so I'd check that first, your mem timings could be to extreme as well. I try and keep my Athlon at about 48c load, it actually keeps my room cooler if I dont let it get to hot :Q.

Assuming the heatsink is properly attached, it won't fall off, your temps are fine and your cpu will not burn up next week.

IIRC AMD's max operating temp for the XP's is 85c?

Of course, if you ever get close to that, say 70+, then it might be time to start worrying, but hey, 50-55 is fine.
