Is 3D for theater and home officially dead?

Eye focus & eye convergence are not at the same point in space with 3D. Eventually, you have to face a million years of evolution. More or less, this is the principal reason people aren't comfortable with 3D. It just doesn't "feel right."

The same could be said about iOS7

Just kidding 😉

My kids like 3D movies, so the only things I have seen in 3D are some of the recent animated kids movies.

It is pretty cool, but I would not pay extra at the theatre or at home to have it (except, maybe for the NFL in 3D - Now that could rock).

animated flicks are probably the most beneficial for 3d imo. at least, they look the best to me.

i still think avatar is the best 3d movie as far as 3d goes, and that was like one of the first ones to do it (in this latest 3d phase).

finding nemo is incredible too. also, the life of pi was great too.

with active glasses (mine at least) you can flip a switch on the glasses while wearing them, and it will change between 2d and 3d. when you start to flip back/forth every few seconds, THAT is when you realize how much 3d adds to the experience. it just adds another dimension and you realize how "flat" the 2d looks when flipping between the 2.

Well I don't really watch many cartoons, so it's not really worth it for me.

My tv has the active 3d setup... What's weird is turning the glasses upside down and watching the movie through that. It reverses the effect, where everything that should be in the front is pushed to the back, and everything in the background is pushed to the front. 🙂

I just love how comfortable wearing glasses over my glasses is too!

Yep.

3D was really hyped up but it was cumbersome and not really worth the added cost. We've got a couple 3DTVs in the studio. They were cool at first but the novelty wears off really quickly.

Its eventual death was when ESPN ended their 3D sports channel. Sports sells TVs, and I think 4K will do far more for that.

I dont see much adverts for new theater movies and home equipment with 3D. is it officially dead? If so i am glad. I never thought it was implemented properly, especially at home. I have seen very few movies in 3D and thought it was better in 2D. Im curious as we get closer to 4K and much bigger screens if 3D will make a comeback then.

The reason is simply that even with a BIG screen there is something essential missing: FOV (Field of View)

Realistic FOV and complete immersion will only be possible with devices like Oculus Rift and whatever else the future will bring. (Exception: Imax with a huge screen...but I am talking about 3D at home where such a FOV can normally not be obtained).

I don't think 3D will be a big thing that sticks until it can be done without the viewer needing to wear an apparatus like glasses.

meh at home i sit about 13' away from a 120" screen. it is extremely immersive.

I think a lot of iOS7 is more about feeling like Windows 8.
On tablet devices, between a Win8 device & iPad - a lot of the noticeable changes really seemed to be more of an imitation of Win8.

A remember a few years ago some people were saying that a majority of phones would have 3D displays soon. Sure am glad that never happened. It did actually happen to some of them but it died off quickly.

3D is cool for some movies, but I hate the fact that everybody has their own proprietary system. 3D needs to be standardized accross all TVs and glasses be universal.

Nobody really cared about 3d in the first place. Strangely, Hollywood itself helped kill interest in it. I've lost track of the number of reviews, and people I know, who have complained how bad the 3d was in the 3d showing, and there was maybe one shot in a movie that looked 3d. Mostly half-assesed, post-conversions for movies not actually shot in 3d.

3D is a stupid gimmick for stupid people to spend stupid money on. it keeps coming back every 15 years or so, like cicadas, star wars and sexually transmitted diseases.

I have 3D on my TV, and I like it well enough. At the level of TV I was looking it, it was really hard to find a TV that didn't have it. On the TV it looks better than the theater IMHO, and everyone I've had over agrees. If there's a 3D option for a movie I'll get it, but it's not a showstopper if it doesn't have it. If 3D went away forever, I think I might be disappointed but wouldn't lose sleep over it.

3D needs to be seen in IMAX for it to really be effective. Otherwise it feels like you're just looking through a distant window. I saw Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX 3D and even knowing it wasn't filmed natively it still looked very impressive.

Saw my first 3D movie about 3 weeks ago. I didn't know what to expect but in the end I was significantly underwhelmed. The technology seems imperfect and unimpressive.

3D movies make me wanna puke.

And the high frame rate shows make it look like we're watching soap operas.

I don't really care for 3D in the theaters, but the whole family enjoys watching 3D bluray at home. Guess I'm happy to be a stupid money wasting fuck.

Bad experience... Only 3D movie I saw was Avatar, and I was in the front row, so the glasses didn't work properly. And I dropped those glasses into a puddle of coke.

If I remember right, the stories written when 3D TVs came out were about how LCD TV/plasma sales had stalled, so manufacturers had to dump something new out to give sales a bump.

I can get a 60 Hz 2D 40"-ish LCD for <$500 now... No way I'd buy a 3D if/when I need another TV for more.
