Is 15,000mi/year for one car too much?

My family has two cars in our house. My father just told me that the reason he bought his 1963 Land Rover was to discourage driving, because last year, the cars in our family drove a total of 30,000 miles (Let's say 15k and 15k).

We are a family of five. The kids use the cars for socializing, when we are to drive. My mother probably drives 250 to 300 miles per week. 500 mile round trips are made to my sister's college tri-annually. 15k miles per car does not seem like a lot, and yet he thinks it is.

The only thing I can think of is that he feels like we socialize too much, but that is far from true. I'm in by 11pm everynight, except for the very few where I sleep over at someone's house, or have permission to stay out later.

So is 15k/year too much? Why the hell would my father feel like limiting our mileage (money is not a huge factor)? None of our driving is mileage which can be easily shaved off. Why can't my father just tell us, instead of getting sly and sneaky and buying a crap car to limit our driving?

I've had my car for a year and 8 months now, almost 20,000 miles. I used to think I had a lot of miles and always worried about it, but as I've heard from others online and off its not all that much.

In HS I drove 30k a year, but now I am about 15k. It is nice to not have to commute so far.

It's normal...I actually think anything up to 18k/year is still considered average, but forget the exact number.

Between my wife and I, we've put ~20K on each of our cars in the last year. 15k seems low to me, which I why I can't even consider leasing!

Your dad is either not very knowledgeable about driving or a hermit.

15K miles is nothing. "Normal" use is 10,000-15,000, with 12,000 annual miles being the "standard" for leases and warranties.

My 2000 tundra has about 80,000 miles on it.

15K miles is pretty normal. I've had my car for over 3 years and I'm just about to hit the 55,000 mile mark with it.

15k is chump change. Between myself and mrsskoorb alone we're putting maybe 10-12k/year on the sentra and 20k+ on the Maxima, so that's already more than your family and it's only two of us.

Something sounds wrong with your dad :) There are plenty of people who put 30-40, or even more on each vehicle a year.

He's stubborn and stuck in his ways. How can I get him to admit that 30k for two vehicles is minimal?

Chances are you can't. Fathers are dumb like that. If I felt lucky I'd find a site on the net that has average driving distances and see if you can demonstrate to him that 15k/year for the average american is nothing - especially a family of 5.
