IRC help

Not quite a FAQ.

BitchX is an ok program, xchat rocks, epic isnt bad, irssi is the best, ircii sucks.
mIRC sucks, but mIRC with ircN is tolerable.

What kind of channels are you looking for? "..." doesnt explain much. Also, which network are you on? That would help 😛

That's weird...I was messing around with IRC for my first time today also, and was going to post a thread. Are there any graphical irc clients where you don't need to use all of the commands?

The JPilot jIRC applet lets you do just that from any browser that can run Java applets. The applet you can use is located right here.

I simply use mIRC 6.0, it's very intuitive. About two dozen AT regulars are often on channel #neochat on the Undernet network - if you can find a way there, you're welcome to stay. 🙂

I'm using mIRC 5.8 32 bit and it works just fine. What's new in version 6?

i've always used mirc. i find it nice and simple. a lot of the other clients just seem to have too much stuff packed in there. but i guess some people like that...

"The new multi-server feature required major internal changes to mIRC's code and forced improvement of code in many areas which has undoubtfully resulted in an even more stable mIRC!" This, and the greater flexibility of mIRC to work in a LAN/routerized environment are pretty much the only changes to the program, but very significant ones. The look is almost exactly the same (thicker window borders that kind of annoy me).

Hey! I like this new avatar, it's debonaire - thus suitable. 😀

Maybe I should install mIRC 6.0 when I install XP Pro. What's a good "lite" IRC client?

Debonaire, you? Nah 😀

Install it now. There is atleast one vulnerability for 5.91. Its pretty bad.

iamc. Its 1 file. I used to use it at work because I could bring it in on a floppy and delete it before I was done. Its very minimalistic though. And not always the easiest to find 😛

<< Thanks for the info n0cmonkey. Think I'll install mIRC 6.0 tonight and try to find iamc. >>

No problem. IamC, first link on google.com. Google is the best 😀

Correction, ATOT & it's awesome 80,000+ members are the best and Google is second to that.

But in terms of search engines Google rocks.

I disagree. ATOT is... Well it is something.. 😉

I was using the google cache a couple days ago to get a few articles off a website that seemed to drop off the face of the planet a while back. Of course the site was backup the next day...

I use mIRC 6.

BTW, why not come join us on #teamanandtech at the irc.teamanandtech.com server. Not quite as busy as the other servers, but still it's a fun place to be in the evening when the action starts. 🙂

How many people are usually in that channel during the weekday evenings?
Which ATers are regs there?

Im there very occassionally (following 2+ different irc servers and countless channels gets tiring), but usually when Im there there isnt much going on. Im there now and its pretty dead.

I don't know exactly, but there are probably 25 people on the weekends, but only 5 to 8 are probably active.
As for regulars, go here to see who talks the most. 🙂

i have never really found a decent computer related irc channel. maybe i will drop by 🙂

oh and for the original first few posters who wanted to get to know how to use irc, there are some basic commands, (you dont need a gui for this, it's simple stuff)

/server irc.servername.org (connects you to an irc server. for efnet, i use irc.lightning.net or irc.prison.net, for undernet, arlington.va.us.undernet.org)
/nick BBWFooey (this sets your nick, or your name, nickname, ah you get it 😛)
/join #channel (channels start with a #)
/list (lists the channels, you can do a search for example "/list *poop*" would find any channel w/ poop in the name. use wildcards just like file searches)
/me is hungry (onscreen this would print "BBWFooey is hungry")
/part #channel (leave a channel)

of course theres a million other commands but those are the main ones to start off with. i use bitchx in linux, and bitchx or mirc in windows. bitchx kinda has this buggy-freezy-uppy thing where it locks up then when you click on it, it like floods your window with text as it reconnects, quite annoying but i found a way around it. i figured i'd try the new mirc cus they FINALLY made it able to connect to multiple servers. after using bx for so long, mirc's colors are kinda ugly...you cant make the people's nicks a different color or anything. oh well.

i like bitchx tho, cus its real simple if you're an irc simpleton like me, but its also real advanced for the elitist irc freaks. xchat is also another for linux, it's gui based, so its similar to mirc...i tried it out, but really didnt like it.

anyways good luck 🙂

I'm having problems getting files. On one server, @find worked but on others it doesn't. Is there some universal command to search? Also, what do I type when I find a file that I want to download? Thanks.

I dont know what @find is, but basically you need to find a large channel, and see if there are any bots in there or whatever that share files (the term escapes me at the moment). Try !list
