Did a search and didn't find anything about this so if it is a repost, I did my best.

Iraq told of flight path and notified of flight time

Anyone think it kind of defeats the purpose of having the U2 overflights if you are going to tell the Iraqis when and where you are going before you do it? Why are the iraqi's allowed to dictate that notice must be given before the flights can occur?

you = stupid. If they have stuff, move it inside, in caves, underground, etc. giving them advance notice will let them move it. I say again you = stupid.

Very much owned. The flight plans hve to be filed 48 hours in advance. It really is pathetic.

No we do not want them to shoot one down. Stupid.

There are enough valid reasons already in Resolution 1441 to remove Saddam from power.

I would think it would be possible for Iraq to shoot down a U2. Russia managed to do it and AA has advanced quite a bit since then. I'm not sure what AA capabilites that Iraq has at this time though.

edit/
Forgot, Has anyone found out who the hell agreed to give Saddam 48 hours notice of the flight plans?

They dont have a chance of shooting a U2 down.

Coulda sworn someone said that once before, right before it was shot down?

This is iraq, not the soviet union.

Iraq has gotten much of their weapons from .... the Soviet Union.

Iraq has the Russian SA-16 which is perfectly capable of shooting down a U2 if given a chance.

Our F-16s and F-15s avoid being shot down by using Jamming and other tactics that prevent advanced SAMs from hitting them.

The U-2 lacks much of that equipment.

The Iraqis have no where near the technology the USSR had.

The Iraqis also were notified of the flight paths, said a U.N. source, speaking on condition of anonymity. A similar arrangement was in place during U.N. inspections in the 1990s.

WTF :disgust:

why bother then

Iraq has in recent weeks charged that the U-2 spied on its conventional defenses during that time, and that data it collected was passed on to the CIA.

The CIA knows if they are capable of downing one. ;)

Well, if they get some decent "before" pics with the sattellite they can really make a case with the "after" pictures taken by the U2.

thing is, there are other spy aircraft available as well as satelliites to get info on Iraq's conventional defenses so using the U2's to gather it is unneccisary.

The U-2 certainly isn't going to fly too high for them. The Iraqi's do possess improved SA-2 systems, which can reach that altitude; granted its awfully tough to hit something that high even if it is subsonic. They still possess at least a couple of operational MiG-25s, so they still would have a high probability of intercepting one at will.
