They dont have a chance of shooting a U2 down.

The U-2 certainly isn't going to fly too high for them. The Iraqi's do possess improved SA-2 systems, which can reach that altitude; granted its awfully tough to hit something that high even if it is subsonic. They still possess at least a couple of operational MiG-25s, so they still would have a high probability of intercepting one at will.

If nothing else shooting at the U-2 will give our planes a target for the next day.

Awfully tough to down a U-2 with a shoulder-fired missile unless it was already on its way down...

True, but Iraq does have the SA-2.

Yea, yea...

I was thinking of the missile that the terrorists would love to use to shoot down an airliner, wrong missile, right idea.

The SA-10 GRUMBLE (which has a max altitude of 100,000ft) is what can hit the U-2, my bad...

BTW, the very much older SA-5 GAMMON (also with a max altitude of 100,000ft) could also bring one down, but the RADAR is so old it might not be useful in that role.

Yes, but I doubt an old SA-2 could bring down a modern U-2.

Are you sure the Iraqis have working SA-10/S300's? I doubt it.

The Sa-5's are really poorly designed for intercepts at above 70k feet of altitude because it would necessitate a launch on a slewed angle and most of the flight would require self-contained sensors to guide it to the target. Fine for launching at packs of bombers, poor at picking out single targets. It is lethal, as the Ukrainian interception of an airliner demonstrated, but it was an incredibly unexpected result as the Russians never intended it to target single aircraft at such great distances. The Libyans know that from experience!

The SA-2 missile has a reasonable chance of interception if the U-2 flies directly within its launch path. This missile requires a command link from the ground and could be steered close enough to kill a U-2 if the situation was right. I could go along with the Americans of sending manned U-2's over Iraq just to draw fire so that they have a reason to invade. Pilotless drones coming down from hostile fire just do not evoke any sort of patriotic responce from the American masses.

Iraq is not going to shoot down a U2 even if they could. Giving then 48 hours notice is asinine.

you = stupid. If they have stuff, move it inside, in caves, underground, etc. giving them advance notice will let them move it. I say again you = stupid.

Right... I make a laughable comment and I get this. Typical pig fvcking Republican bullshit. Just because you a$$ baskets can't argue a turb out of a paper bag you change the fvcking topic. How fvcking typical. If you actually pulled your head out of your a$$ long enough to get some oxigen to your 3 fvcking brain cells things might be different. Doubt that'll happen anytime soon you sack of sh!t.

I guess the response needs to fit the Anandtech forum political policy. Simply call someone stupid anytime anyone says anything. So Evadman, you dumb fvcker, you're stupid. Oooooo... That showed you! I'm sooooo cool.

Ooooo... All Chem/Bio/Nuke labs must be exposed to sunlight to operate, thank god we have 48 hours to hide 'em.

I'll stick the proper Anandtech sanctioned political responces next time. My mistake sh!t sack. :)

This just pisses me off. What the fvck is wrong with the people conducting these investigations?

I'm a pacifist, but even I understand that action needs to be taken - ethical issues of US involvement in UN affairs notwithstanding, the UN has an obligation and, dare I say, moral duty to ensure these inspections are carried out in as objective a fashion as possible.

I'm not aware of what improvements have been made to the U2s but it was a SA-2 that shot the U2 down over Russia.

Thera - What an exceptional vocabulary you have! Use it elsewhere, please. Your use of expletives annoys decent folks! By the way, do you vote?

ROFL...nice. :) I see it's business as usual in Iraq.

Saddam "concedes" U2 overflights but receives advanced warning, effectively rendering them useless.

Saddam "concedes" private interviews with scientists, but until they leave the country with their families those conversations are worthless as well.

You gotta love those concessions...Saddam is really showing signs of cooperating, isn't he?

It's hard to believe anyone can actually swallow this sh*t and ask for seconds...but then I guess the UN is full of such exceptional individuals, isn't it?

They tightened up the wings after the first U2 incident. The first U2 shot down by SAMs was never actually hit, the sonic blasts from the warheads exploding shook the wings enough to snap them apart.

Ah yes, I forgot about the Grand Poomba of Stumbling Around the Desert With His Head Up His Ass. Has he found any polyps yet? Or is he not really looking very hard...afraid of the surgery such a find might trigger?
