That is ridiculous. The Iraqi's plea should have been heard - and then rejected outright. They (Iraq) should put emphasis on the words "unconditional" and "looming war if you don't cooperate".

Saying that - I'm awaiting for the story to appear on the BBC site before I make a final opinion.

Iraq: What, two planes at once. You might catch us violating the sanctions.
UN: You're right. We wouldn't want to do that. It might start a war.
Iraq: Thanks for understanding.

But a U.S. official said Iraq "informed us when the planes were in the air that only one was acceptable and the second would be viewed as 'hostile."'

U2s are not armed, this is just another reason to take Saddam out.

I wonder how the Saddam apologists will explain this one. If the Russian ambassador's statement is any indication, the answer is "not very well."

Little Mr. Blix is a disgrace. He had better drop his personal agenda and do his job.

U-2 = "hostile"??? WTF? The whole war is really pissing me off now. Its becoming clearer and clearer that there is NO "Right" side and no "Wrong" side to this whole debacle.

FACT: America jumped the gun on condemning Iraq a YEAR AND A HALF ago. That was when CNN etc. broke the news that there were plans to go to war in Iraq over failure to meet UN resolutions. We made our intentions clear without building a case first...and lost the credibility of the world because of it. GWB couldn't keep his hawkish defense buddies in check and made us look like a bunch of war-hungry Klingons. Bush himself comes off like an arrogant asshole on television whenever he comes on at primetime. He looks tired and drained. I seriously doubt he'll last into a second term even if he does get reelected in '04. Hey Republicans: whatever happened to 'America First'? The economy is still lagging and we want to commit billions of dollars to a massive war effort...correction...we've already SPENT billions of dollars on a war which hasn't happened yet!

FACT: France, Germany and Russia have all been trading around the embargos set after the '91 Gulf War. They've been profiting from trade with Saddam's regime. I don't really blame Russia: they are developing regional ties frankly their economy isn't doing so well and they need favorable trade with anyone. Germany I don't understand. The French really do suck...at first I didn't think so but now it looks like their true skin (or lack of) is showing. This European isolationism is really funny. Before it was just each country trying to maximize profit for itself. Europe got progressive with institutions like the European Union and the International Court, INTERPOL etc...but they still can't see the world for what it is outside of Europe. I almost think that France and Germany view Iraq in an imperialistic manner: they are profiting from trade with this 'colony state' so obviously nothing is wrong with the regime there...and they will do anything to keep that regime in place as long as it is profitable.

FACT: The growing numbers of anti-war protests have become increasingly less anti-war and increasingly more anti-America. Even within this great nation itself we've seen protesters destroying 9/11 memorials! This really pains me. Even the liberals (who I usually side with) are viewing this war as a great excuse to express their hatred of our government and of American capitalism in general. These are the same asshats who go out and protest the WTO coming to town. Great. So you don't want war, and you don't want peaceful fair trade either? We want to punish countries like China for human rights violations, but when it comes time to dole out punishment to Iraq, you no longer support us? Stop smoking that pot and get a life.

EDIT: How could I forget?
rolleye.gif

FACT: Iraq has weapons of mass destruction somewhere. Saddam is an evil man. Saddam's sons are evil. Saddam's whole regime is evil. But the Iraqi people are "a poor, suffering lot with little food and shelter, and they are merely afraid of what could happen if they rose up against Saddam and his fearsome Republican Guard". Oh please, give me a fscking break! IMHO, if Iraq really wanted regime change, they would have tried and failed once or twice already since the Gulf War. Guess what?? They never tried!! Are we really advancing democratic ideals by doing the dirty work for them, then just handing back the country saying "here, cut up some paper strips with some names on them and have an election"?? The best way to win support of this war is to have the Iraqi people fight it themselves. The fact that they are unwilling to do this just proves that whether or not the US wins the war, overall it will be a failure. The Baath Party and Baath ideals will always rule Iraq.

This is bad comedy. Anyone with 2 peas for a brain can understand that Iraq is trying to hide SOMETHING from the single U2 but cannot hide SOMETHING from 2 U2s in the air simultaneously.

and are wonderful UN gives Saddam more slack....

I am still up in the air when it comes to going to war, but it's incidents like this that has confirms my suspicions that Iraq is hiding SOMETHING.

yeah, I am curious to see what the Saddam apologists have to say about this latest activity.

Fvck it, they should send those things back in the air with a half dozen planes escorting and bomb the tar out of any anti-air.

This won't mean a thing to the French anyway and Russians. They'll defend Saddamn's actions in one way or another.

Ya that U2 is such a huge threat, what with it's cameras and um...ya that's it just cameras, no weapons. A threat in actually finding something is all I can think of. And are they saying they would consider trying to shoot it down? Because they know that if they fired upon it, they would then be an agressor and prompt war to begin.

The U-2 planes were flying missions at 2 a.m. Iraqi time for the U.N. weapons inspectors when Iraq (news - web sites) launched fighter jets.

We should have taken those fvckers out right then and there, I don't care if it started a war or not. :|

They've been trying to shoot down planes for years. The more you think about it the more likely you are to be disgusted at the level of continued uncooperation from Iraq.

I think its because:

a) They should not be putting conditions on these inspections
b) They are acting like they have something to hide
