Iran threatens action if U.S. carrier returns

Oil prices go up, Russia makes a pile of money, China pays more for oil in the short term but has chips to cash in down the road with the US for support.

not that iran has the tech to even hit a moving target... but if they tried.. they'd take out everything else in the gulf, including neighboring countries... even they're not stupid enough to use a nuke.

That's stupid. The first nukes a county develops are not megaton devices. If Iran had nukes they'd only blast a few miles at best, and in this case we're talking over open water. Such small, tactical devices sound great for taking out military units.

Wow, seems like we just economically assraped Iran and the real sanctions haven't even started.

The prospect of sanctions targeting the oil sector in a serious way for the first time has hit Iran's rial currency, which has fallen by 40 percent against the dollar in the past month.
Queues formed at banks and some currency exchange offices shut their doors as Iranians scrambled to buy dollars to protect their savings from the currency's fall

Bigger question is WHY.

Russia helped patrol the straights previously for mines.

/edit - I am thinking that Earl is expecting Russia/China to come to bat for Iran

na he is an angry America hating canuck who would love to see a piss ant country give the US a bloody nose by doing something to our navy.

The article states that China is holding out for a better discount then they currently receive for Iranian oil.

There will be no conventional war with Iran in the near future. Iran has fronted these baseless threats previously with no meat to back them up and they'll do it again.

Sure, they could conceivably shut down the strait for a brief period of time by firing their torpedos to sink freighters but, then the US military would destroy their country. No, the Iranians are full of hot air.

In case anybody has lost all logic somewhere along the way, I'll give you a useful tip.

When dealing with issues like this, all you need to do is flip the roles around. What would we do if Iran had an aircraft carrier in the gulf of mexico?

.

As long as the carrier is in international waters it isn't a issue. During the cold war the Soviets regulary had submarines and trawlers off the US coast. Iran is trying to dictate where the US can deploy its naval vessels. As long as the US naval vessels remain in International waters then it isn't a issue. If Iran want's to have a warship off the US coast in international waters then they can go right ahead and do that.

Where's all the oil we plundered?

You mean the oil your Haliburton buddies get and we pay over $101 a barrel and $4 gas?

Obviously you are in on personally "plundering" Americans and America.

Ive been watching 2 other piss ant countries giving the US a bloody nose for a decade now, I don't need to see anymore thank you

See, where you are wrong is that I care about those people who get shipped overseas to fight.
That's why the majority of them support RP

Sounds like you have an issue with Canada

You really think China don't mind paying premiums?

Why would China go to war with the US over Iran? Did you even read the article? China could be buying Iranian oil NOW at a significantly reduced price but has instead chosen to pay premiums to buy from elsewhere. Indeed, they have been buying Iranian oil but have cut way back. Why do you suppose this is?

Iran is being sanctioned because of its nuclear efforts, and they're the ones making threats, causing oil prices to go up. They're the ones causing the issue here; they're the ones that last week (IIRC) threatened to close the Straits of Hormuz. Do you think China will rally to Iran's cause and allow them to close the Straits?

No offense, but I'm tired of people playing the "But..bu...bu...China and Russia!" card every time an international incident or crisis develops. China and Russia didn't do jack except ratchet up the rhetoric when the Iraq War happened and the same will happen if any physical incident occurs in the gulf due to Iran, I can assure you. They talk big but won't back it up and frankly, why should they? Iran, Iraq, and similar countries aren't worth the cost in lives and money to defend when you'd lose against the US.

Unless you are Nebor, who somehow believes that CVBG's create a 10-mile bubble of US territory wherever they go. 😱

Correct. The US does not arbitrarily sink any military vessel that gets close to "our waters." We will heavily track their every movement with the use of satellites, but we would not attack them with conventional means unprovoked.

Bingo. Neither Russia or China gains anything from a confrontation with the US. Both have everything to lose and nothing to gain.

Exactly, and what we're seeing now is what we see with North Korea on a regular basis -- increased rhetoric and saber rattling in order to get some concessions.

I agree. China and Russia are busy with their own internal problems and are not chomping at the bit to go to war with anyone, least of all the U.S. There will be no war with Iran, China, Russia or any other nation in the near future.

Make no mistake -- the US military is unmatched in its ability to rapidly annhilate and conquer its adversaries. The difficulty is when you ask it to occupy and build nations, which it wasn't really equipped to do.

Bloody noses are because the politicians have no idea on what they want the military to accomplish.

Military should not be expected to handle an occupation of a country. They are expect to defeat the opponent and get the hell out - leaving behind a broken shell that the politicians can mold.
Hanging around more than that or not being allowed to accomplish such defeats the purpose

Iran issues silly press release => price of oil goes up => Iran makes more money.

As long as the Iranians don't do anything, it's cheap profit.

lol really?

You don't suppose the US being the only superpower running around invading foreign countries has anything to do with that stat?

You don't think any other countries are capable of doing what you did in Iraq?

Maybe one day, you will get a chance to see another country use the US pre-empt excuse.

I'm thinking you will probably change your tune and condemn the offending nation

And where do you see him approving of the recent wars?

It's a simple statement.
