Oops. Well, at least he 'tried' right? I guess we're back to Bush's policy on Iran now. Maybe Obama could up the offer of peace with a box of DVD's? Obama is so out of his league here its not funny.. I bet he really thought his offer would be accepted and peace and rainbows would rain from heaven.

go read my thread from a couple after Obama got elected and iran recognized it actually would have to deal with the US and couldn't rely on Bush's obstinate "we don't talk to terror states" position as a means of deflecting criticism.

Yes, not talking to them like bush did really slowed their nuclear ambitions. We need world opinion on our side to oppose iran effectively, and refusing to talk to them put us in a position of less power, not more.

Americans also supported talking to Iran 60/40 as of June 08.

However, if you read the short notice, it doesn't say anything about rejecting Obama. All you currently have is no response on a message that isn't very old (which is today here...March 20th, right? They are a day ahead, of us, right?). They may still be thinking about what they want to do.


Of course we have a 'press advisor to Iran's president' that downplays the video. However, we know where real power lies in Iran (Khamenei). Mr. Ahmadinejad is also looking down the tunnel and sees an election that he has to face.

Before declaring total failure, we should probably be waiting for any response (public or private) from the real power bloc in Iran. If I had to guess, they are probably looking at their options now
 
A policy of "we're ready to begin talking when you are" is win-win. It may not lead to peace in the Middle East on day one, but it allows a relationship to begin taking form and sets the stage for the next decade of relations with Iran. At the same time, it takes all credibility away from Iran to be able to pose as the aggrieved party and more effectively isolates them politically.

For the more simple-minded, you could alternately say, what good did the status quo do? The answer: Zip.

Really? when? I could have sworn he merely said it was a better position and that nothing could be achieved if we steadfastly refused any negotiations. If Iran balks at talks, already the US becomes the "pursuer of peace." Every poll taken indicates the rest of the world has increased their respect for the US since Obama was elected. This gives us political capital, which is useful in avoiding full scale wars. I know that ticks off the hawks and chickenhawks, but too bad.

Exactly... Why is this so hard for people like Specop and Fear no evil to understand? Either they are thick headed, and just dont understand international politics, or they are just trying to be trolls and crap all over anything and everything Obama says and does.
 
They will show an interest once we deliver a couple of these new bad-boys to Israel. Russia better get that S-300 there pronto. I would be willing to bet that these guys have S-300 evading capabilites.

Given the way Obama praised the offer, its somewhat guaranteed to be something Iran will reject in an strange Alice restaurant manner.

And its bound to trigger the same type of Arlo Guthrie type disbelief at the induction center, you mean you mean, after being arrested for littering, you wonder if I am moral enough to join the US Army, go to Vietnam, and then burn women and children, houses and villages?

If on the other hand , Obama is willing to talk to Iran , and say both our nations have rather bad relations with each other, the past can't be changed, and lets explore ways to have better future relationships based on common interests, Obama would likely get much further much faster.

In the grand scheme of things, almost any unbiased person has to admit, the US has done more wrongs to Iran than Iran has done to the US. And neither are guilt free. But better mutual relations would be much better for the US, Iran, and the region.

The Israel issue will never be resolved without both sides agreeing to make adjustments in their policies. We seem to think that they are intolerant and unwilling to change, but we are the same when it comes to revising Israel's special relationship with the US.

They really do feel paranoid sandwiched between two American war zones...but we get all kooky when Cuba and Venezuela talk to the Russians about conducting naval exercises in the Caribbean sea.
