Wait a second...that is kinda silly

Yeah, that bugged me too, until I noticed that I usually just use the Shuffle songs feature most of the time on my snazzy new iPod Photo. As long as you can skip songs that you don't like, I guess that I don't see the big deal in it.

Why would you buy a ticket to a concert just to boo the performers? ;)

Probably to keep them under $100
but you can get other flash mp3 players with all that and under 100.
Why is that fact ALWAYS brushed aside in these topics?

Buy a Nomad MuVO TX FM for ~$120 and get voice recording, a screen and FM tuner.

Don't ask me as I'll probably never own an iPod purchsed w/my own money. Maybe because Apple is sexy in a hippie sort of way?

No probably about it. The competition is at minimum $20 more. You get a screen and better sound for it, and the unfortunate knowledge that Apple is making a higher profit margin.

Most MP3 players under $100 still have less than 512MB of storage, though.

There is a forward and back button on the thing. That gives you...drumroll...control!

Yeah, but unless you go on road trips every weekend, who really needs more than 512mb worth of music on their person? :p
Er, dude, 512MB is at most 7 albums (45min) at any decent quality. With newer albums (often ~60min), 4-5. That's not even what a CD can hold. And if you don't have a PC around with other music on it...well, what do you do if you're no longer in the mood for the music you stuck on there?

-Cerbie, who'd actually buy an Ipod if they were UMSDs.

...because they typically involve rebates. What sub-$100 player is 512MB? I think Sandisk is the only one right now.

12 hour battery life is quite bad for a flash player and one with no screen which means no backlight. My iRiver H120 gets better life than that thing. The new iRiver H10 Junior flash players will have up to 2GB and up to 60 hours of battery life.

You screwballs have been living too much in Apple land...

Umm, that one involves a rebate. You weren't trying to PROVE Cerb's point, were you? :)

Emphasis added. Not much more than $100, though, so not bad.

ornery i think point proven, that nomad muvo TX seems waaay better deal than shuffle in that 2nd link

....shuffle is good but if apple restricts a screen and only 12hr battery life this should start at around 80$ rather than 100$...but it is apple.... since you can get more control and features with similar products like the nomad movo TX, the shuffle shoulb be hardly recommended...

Change it when you get home each night?

If during the course of a normal day, you manage to listen to five albums enough that you get sick of them, then you probably have a pretty easy job...that will be done by robots soon. :p

Listen to five albums? No. But what if I am not at home, and I feel like listening to something that isn't on those five albums?
So I put on Dirt, Promised Land, Dvorak's no. 9, Toys in the Attic, and JCS...but then I feel like listening to some bluesy stuff. I'm screwed. Just accept that there's a reason larger capacity players exist in various kinds for good reason.

The battery life issue is misleading. Most of those other flash players take sing triple a batteries, whereas the suffle recharges from the usb port.

I guess...if you feel compelled for some reason to have super-high quality, lossless MP3's that you're only gonna listen to through earbuds anyway...
