Yeah, but unless you go on road trips every weekend, who really needs more than 512mb worth of music on their person? :p
Er, dude, 512MB is at most 7 albums (45min) at any decent quality. With newer albums (often ~60min), 4-5. That's not even what a CD can hold. And if you don't have a PC around with other music on it...well, what do you do if you're no longer in the mood for the music you stuck on there?

-Cerbie, who'd actually buy an Ipod if they were UMSDs.
Change it when you get home each night?

If during the course of a normal day, you manage to listen to five albums enough that you get sick of them, then you probably have a pretty easy job...that will be done by robots soon. :p
Listen to five albums? No. But what if I am not at home, and I feel like listening to something that isn't on those five albums?
So I put on Dirt, Promised Land, Dvorak's no. 9, Toys in the Attic, and JCS...but then I feel like listening to some bluesy stuff. I'm screwed. Just accept that there's a reason larger capacity players exist in various kinds for good reason.
Sure, if you wanna what-if to death...I can think of reasons that 60 gb wouldn't be enough.

i can fill 512 megs with 4 mp3s
I can fill it with one...what's your point?
it has a useless amount of space
I guess...if you feel compelled for some reason to have super-high quality, lossless MP3's that you're only gonna listen to through earbuds anyway...
Lossless MP3s are an impossibility (transparent MP3s are not, though).

Arguably, but I'd take 1aaa any day, since I can use rechargables, and when I run out on the road, every store will have what I need.

Maybe so, but it's a lot better than 512MB. In fact, 1GB offers a significant amount of additional choice.

Uhm... people are sh!tting on the shuffle for having crappy batter life when it recharges by itself. The other players have Tripple fvcing A batteries, which are expensive, especially as rechargeable.

A significant amount to the tune of...say...double?

 $5 for AAA or AA batteries (1 in player, 1 in charger) that will last you several years (500-1000 charge cycles) is expensive? Even with a charger, that's only $25--less if you consider it worth the time to look for better prices.

Also, other players can use the USB connection to charge, such as the Cowon iAudio U2 (which is basically placed to be Shuffle competition).

Yes. Almost exactly double. Strange how binary works. :)

You guys get all hot and bothered about your mp3's. Remember, sound quality is only dependant on what you're using them for. And remember, iPod's are sold at a premium because they can be. There is typically always a cheaper alternative to the leader in any given market, because otherwise, no one could compete.

I'm thinking of picking up one of the $99 Shuffles, and I hate to come into a thread to find some useful info and find a bunch of useless arguing between a bunch of people who think they know everything about mp3 players.

why not just try a different brand flash players? there isnt only apple :), and some of the other guys have some very nicely designed players with fm, a small screen, and that are just about as small as the shuffle

personlly, i thought it was kind of a cool idea until i saw it at BB, it just seemed a little flimsy, and too easy to lose, but i dont know if that is a good or a bad thing :)

Do iFanbois live under a rock, or what?

One rechargable AAA battery lasts my wife over a week in her non iApple MP3 player, and there's a pile of freshly charged ones on her desk. EVERYTHING is going to AAA batteries these days! How can you NOT own a big pile of rechargables?

Are they good? Any problems with them? etc.)

They do too little for too much. Guess you have enough proof of that by now, no?

Not quite any proof, just a bunch of opinionated blubber.

iFanbois...
  • They cost more
  • No LCD
  • Require iTunes software
  • No FM
  • Minimal battery life...
What in that list is NOT true?

$99 is a fair price.

Don't need an LCD

I have no issues with iTunes

No need for FM. FM radio sucks.

12 hours of battery life is fine.

That's my opinion...

They cost more. What, $15? No LCD. They weren't designed with an LCD in mind, get over it. Require iTunes software, big deal. Companies require their own software all the time, it's nothing new. iTunes is definitely one of the leaders in the market, so atleast your being forced to use one of the best. No FM, I'll give you that. Minimal battery life, that subject has been beaten to death in this thread. It's perfectly understandable why it has a smaller battery life, and hell, 12 hours is nothing to scoff at. I'll gladly take a self-rechargable player over keeping up with batteries for an extra 4 hours. Depending on how much you use the player, you'll end up saving more money in the long run over saving $15 at the initial purchase.

It costs more for less, yet you can't admit it. WTF? Fanboism at its worst! Nobody with even half a brain uses disposable batteries... sheesh!

Hmm, all this talk about ipods is making me more and more tempted to spend the $80 to get the headphone adapter and a 1gb sd card to turn my treo into a portable mp3 player. When Apple makes a combo cell phone, mp3 player, and pda device I'll pay attention to their products. Until then...

Meh, I'd rather spend the extra $20 and keep the wear and tear off my PDA...but that's just how I get down.

I also have a beater to keep the miles off my pleasure car.
