iPod mini

I have been thinking about getting an iPod mini. I have a few thousand songs off of peer to peer software like kazaa, and winmx, and a few others. Can I use songs from these peer to peer programs, or do I have to use iTunes songs? Because I really dont' feel like spending $1 for every song I want. Thanks

you can use whatever you like, but i wouldnt mention piracy on AT so openly

I bet 90% of the people on here still download on peer to peer. Besides I might start to use Itunes. Is the quality from iTunes better?

It really depends on what you mean by better. The songs are encoded in 128kbps AAC Audio Format, which I think sounds a lot better than either .wma or .mp3. The songs are also quality controlled so they all are of the same quality without having playback problems or being laced with spyware/viruses. I would recommend using iTunes, and whether 90% of people on here still download off of P2P networks, that does not make it legal.

Indeed you do have to use iTunes to get the music YOU ALREADY HAVE onto your Mini--- But that is as a interface to the mini - You need not buy anything. There is supposed to be a version of music match that will work too....

The iPods play their MP3's out of a hidden directory on the drive... While you can drag and drop data to the device, and even drag and drop mp3's.... It won't play those MP3's unless they are in the hidden directory... the only way around this is to hack your ipod/ipod mini using OSX or Linux. OSX is easiest to do it in while the Linux hack is quite over my head.

So Apple is pulling a Microsoft by having you install iTunes in order to load your mini.... Kinda sly but most people don't mind.... though that is the same reason I didn't buy the iPod and got a 20gig iRiver iHP-120 instead.--->I just drag and drop and play.

iPods are capable of playing MP3, .WAV, .AAC, and now Lossless AAC.

in response to your question, yes, ipods will play almost anything, my friend owns one, and he loads it up with all sorts of junx he gets off p2p software, but you really shouldn't openly express that you use p2p software like kazaa so openly, because its not really whats the word im looking for.... legal now? Just a thought 😉

Well I haven't really downloaded anything in quite a while. Ever since the stuff about the riaa started to get really big last fall. So I can play these files on an iPod fine? Or do I have to hack it? Or do I have to get iTunes?

You will need something like iTunes or Musicmatch Jukebox to download the files to the iPod. As long as the files are one of the files formats I listed above they will work fine.

If you take the time to read you will find that this has been answered...

Sorry, when the stuff about the hacking and stuff started I got kinda confused. I have been looking around and reading some things. People are saying to just spend the extra $50 and get the 15gb version instead of the mini. Is the 15gb version that much bigger? I'm kinda looking for something I can just put in my pocket. Thanks

I bought my girlfriend an iPod Mini when they first came out, and they are extremely small, but when compared to my 15GB version, they aren't small enough to make me want one over what I have. Either one will be extremely portable, so if having the extra small size of the mini appeals to you, grab it, but if you want more than 4GB of music on the thing and don't mind a few more ounces, grab the 15GB. I personally didn't have a problem carrying either in my pocket.

yes, you can play anything on your mini- and now it actually is anything. the new version of itunes can convert your windows media files to aac, so those will play on it now as well. get the mini- i have a 1st gen ipod with 5gigs, and you really dont need any more than 4 gigs with you at all times- whatever new music youve got, and your essentials. 🙂

Some of the heavy rock songs sound rather tinny or crappy off of itunes, but other than that it's all good.

um, i just read an article about this. umm. i think that i read that it lowers the sound quality, or you lose some sort of functionality, so you can see the penguin instead of the apple when your ipod starts up. pretty worthless, if i remember correctly.

Can someone elaborate more on the ipod linux os hacK? What is it suppose to do?

It's actually a way to "unhide" the hidden directory for playback on the iPod so you can simply drag and drop MP3's into that folder WITHOUT using iTunes............ There is also a way to do this in OS X as well.

Yes, there are other Linux hacks.... the one refered early on in this thread is from me and is in relation to unmasking that hidden directory -- SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO DO IF YOU WANT TO BE FREE from iTUNES.....

Google it.

If anyone wants to hear for themselves the sound quality of the of iTunes donloads, they are doing free downloads right now for a certain song each day. Today is an Annie Lennox remix, and a few days ago they had a Foo Fighters song. So if you are curious about sound quality, I'd grab one of the free downloads while they are doing them and give them a try. The also songs download really fast if you have boradband, which is really nice if you are used to waiting forever for P2P downloads.

And as far as P2P software goes, the jury is still literally out on that until someone is successfully convicted in court and that conviction holds up under appeals. For now file sharing is in a bit of a legal gray area until a big "Sony vs. Hollywood" style case decides one and for all what rights we we have or don't have in the matter.

Here's a link to a free PDF download of Free Culture, a book by Lawrence Lessig that deals with the moral and legal ambiguities of the matter. It's a good read.

Heck all I need is 128MB. My mini RCA lyra is fine with my songs reencoded down to 64K WMA. I can fit over 40 songs with this. More than enough for jogging and time at the gym.

You don't have to use itunes.. there are third party programs that are still out there that were out before itunes for windows came out. And if you downloaded all your songs from kazaa good luck navigating your ipod.. it uses the id3 tags to navigate and most people dont use id3 tags correctly.

For those saying to upgrade to the 15.... My 15 is nice, but I'm starting to really get really get intrigued by the mini. When the mini goes to say 8 GB I'm tempted to dump my 15 for the 8.

yea the size of the hd is def offset by the size of the unit, which is so small that it truely does become convenient to tote around. no pocket wart..
